It's my first blogiversary today! - Thanks to all readers and to all those you commented on different entries during the last year. This was not only my first year with this blog, but in the blogosphere as such - and it has been much fun thanks to all you kind and friendly people!

Heute habe ich nicht nur meine Ein-Jahrs-Feier, ich habe auch einen größeren Schritt vor, von dem ich doch stark hoffe, dass es dieses Blog nicht ruinieren wird: Ich ziehe um auf eine neue Seite. Ich hoffe, ihr werdet alle mit mir umziehen und eure Subskriptionen, Links, und Lesezeichen aktualisieren. Für diejenigen von euch, die jedes Mal die Adresse neu in die Adresszeile eingeben sollte es einfacher werden: Ich bin nun Besitzerin der ganzen Domain http://buechertiger.de und logischerweise findet man mein Blog unter http://blog.buechertiger.de.

Though the blog is up and running there, the rest of the pages is still a bit of a construction site. - Please excuse the inconvenience. Probably in the next weeks the look of it will change again - but I hope that the blog itself will stay pretty much recognizable.
Generally the move has many advantages: The page will be much better structured and it will be easier for me to put content online. So manybe I will finally start to put up some of the instructions that I partly wrote already and partly are planning to write. I am also planning to have better link sections and what not. You can read about my plans on my new blog here.

Der Blog selbst funktioniert schon einwandfrei, aber der Rest der Präsenz, vor allem meine Homepage sind noch verschiedenen Baumaßnahmen unterworfen und werden sich auch noch in nächster Zeit ändern. - Bitte entschuldigt das. Davon abgesehen wird natürlich alles besser und schöner dort.
Da es für mich einfacher sein wird, Inhalt bereit zu stellen, habe ich vor demnächst mal die Anleitungen, die ich teilweise schon geschrieben, teilweise nur geplant habe, breit zu stellen. What I Don't Enter in the Current Book Swap

I am currently participating in a book swap at Jackie's book arts forum. (I already mentioned that here.) Today I finished the book that I'll enter in the swap. So now I can show you pictures of the other books which I don't enter. Both of them were made as contributions. But with both I was not quite satisfied.

Above you see the book "alien". It is an ordinary Coptic bound book but has earplugs on the covers.

I think it looks hilarious and totally alien. But it isn't a book - neither does it have text nor is it easy to add some because the earplugs rather hinder its functionality. I am still planning to make a box for it. But it is hard for me to stick to projects that are already partially discarded.

The alien book was actually the second one I came up with. The first one was this:

It is called "Putzmittel" which German and means cleaning agent. It is a photo album and contains photos of Putzmittel available here in supermarkets. I went through there and shot photos.

There are several things I like about the book: I think it is good and sound as a book. I like this way of making a photo album and already plan to make more. The signatures consist just of 2 sheets of watercolor paper and additionally 4 strips of watercolor paper to make room for the photos to be entered.
I like the idea to use these rubber gloves as decorative element. This was meant to be the unconventional ingredient to this book. I was thinking about chicken feet leather and the like, and thought I could modify the idea a bit to make it work.
But then it wasn't so easy to cut up the glove right, and it doesn't really stick to the cover at the edges (that's because the material is not flat to start with and the tension this causes builts up at the edges). Also the pen didn't quite stick to the glove and is slightly smeared. And I started with too few photos, so I had to take more. Which I did. But now I would need to search through them, decide which ones to get printed on photo paper, add them. To Arrange everything into the chapters as initially inteded will be hard. - I'd just have to make it again, and I am lacking the energy and time to do so right now. And overmore - it is rather big and heavy; I decided too heavy to be send across the ocean.

Now I just hope I took the right decision and Jackie likes the book I am sending her. I'll show it off once it has reached her - I don't want to spoil the surprise!

Webdesign

I mentioned already that I am occupied with webdesign at the moment. I am renting my own domain and will set up a homepage and also my blog there in near future. Of course I'll give you all the links in great detail once everything is set up. At the moment all this is still one big construction site. Alone yesterday I created more than 30 images like the one above and below. They are meant to serve as background for web pages, I designed banners and background for navigation panels and what not. Until now I have not come up with something I am truly satisfied with. Either I find them too boring, or I think the background attracts to much attention, or reading the text on the background is to hard, ...

I just posted this to give you a sign of life - I am not gone and will be back soon!

In the short times while my computer is loading or calculating stuff I managed to finish some more Mini Ritter Sport booklets. Furthermore I finished some more fancy books one of which will be entered in the book swap at the book arts forum. Once I have decided which one of them I'll give away I will show you pictures of those that will remain with me. And once this is all done, and I cleaned out and put up my new book press, I should have new books and methods and tutorials to present to you.

That's my lunch today: Strawberries with buttermilk. - I don't have new bookish pictures to share today.The past few days I was all occupied with other stuff (mainly web-designing, but that's a different story and will be told another time). A good opportunity to pick up the tag that I received last week from The Spotted Sparrow - thanks for thinking of me!
So apparently now I have to name seven of my favorite things and seven of my favorite blogs. Mhm, let me think... I'll change that into my favorite things to do at the moment:

Now the blogs: Well, I have at the moment 51 subscriptions in my reader (yes, well, I read to much, really...) that makes it hard to choose. I decided to name 7 on which I don't necessarily pass on the tag (some are too big to react on a tag from me, I think) and restricted myself to those that I have never linked to before:

About the Binding - A blog dedicated to fine bindings. The author gives us an unusually deep insight into her way of working.
Studio 5 Book Arts - Also a book binder interested in fine bindings, less traditional than the first and more into arts
Shakled in Bookspace - (Maybe I have linked to this blog before - I can't remember clearly.) I was first drawn to the blog by its fabulous title. The writer is a book binder, sometimes he'll show pictures of his own work, but this is not the primary focus of this blog. Most of the time you can read his thoughts that are work related - and I like his sparce and dry comments.
With Green Chair Press we slowly turn from book binders to print makers - probably you all know this blog and I don't have to say much about it. The author sometimes presents her work on this blog, some of which are actually books, but she also comments on recent developments in the world of print and books, webfinds, and the like.
Minus Five - Best go and have a look yourself. I don't know how to describe this New York based designer in just a few words
Amanda Watson-Will - an artist and crafter. At the moment occupied with printing. I like that she's sharing her experiments and unusual approaches.
And at last something that as rather few connection to books: Indexed - a fun blog with comments on life and society in the form of graphs.

My First Time at a Bookbinding Workshop

The last two Saturdays I spent with Nina Judin, who taught to two others and me a Coptic binding with headbands. Her workshop is located in a souterrain flat in the center of Amsterdam. It was rather cool down there, taking away the heat of my overexcited days in a pleasant way. Although it was half way in the cellar, it had enough light, coming from two direction - through windows at the front and on the back facing a patio. The whole atmosphere was so relaxing... Thinking back her studio seems like an island of peace in the last weeks. I had been stressed for days, working too hurriedly, always with my eyes not on my work in front of me but on the huge stack of work still to be done. Going there was like stepping out of it all.
A week before the course I booked my trip to Amsterdam. - And was shocked to learn that on Saturday mornings trains to Amsterdam don't take 3 hours like on almost every other day and time but 5. The workshop started at 10.30 a.m., I should reach the station at least half an hour earlier to this,... I seriously thought of bailing out - and I am so glad that I didn't!

This was going to be the first time for me to learn, not from a book, or by trial and error, but from another person. In the description it said this was a course suitable for beginners. So I thought that, since I had already some practice in (Coptic) binding books, I wouldn't learn much on the technical aspects of binding books, and expected to learn mainly how to give a good bookbinding course. At the same time I was rather nervous, expecting from myself to deliver a perfect book in these two days. But with both assumptions I was completely and utterly wrong. I learned so much these days, in every aspect and mostly about binding books! I made a book that was in no way perfect. My struggle to do so is just another indication for the stress I am feeling at the moment and that I am mostly putting on me myself. Another indicator for my momentary restlessness was the speed with which I was working hurriedly and unfocused. Although I realized it, I just couldn't turn it off - at least not during the first session last week.

I heard people saying before that they learn many small details on workshops, but only now I realize how true this is. I want to share the most important idea for me: this makeshift construction of a thin awl:
It is just a bookbinding needle attached to the handle of an x-acto knife (or hobby knife). Of course I have bookbinding awls here. But they really are too thick to use them for punching holes in paper for binding. I had tried different methods for punching holes into sections before, but this is really the best way I have seen so far to do it.

I don't even want to try to give a complete recount of all the things I learned; it started with the most basic things, really. The following picture shows a detail of how the stitching looks like on the Coptic bound books I usually make:

I hope this is visible - the black thread makes it harder to see... Both books are bound in a 2-needle style. But at the book on top the thread only loops around the previous section, and on the other pictures you can see thread that loops around and then it tugged under itself.

I can't say often enough how much I enjoyed the whole experience and atmosphere. If you can arrange it, try a workshop with Nina Judin yourself. And if you can't make it to Amsterdam, maybe you want to have a look at her boks online.

Gripped by the Mini Book Frenzy - Again

In the photo above you see the new and improved third generation of Ritter Sport Mini books. The Siam paper worked well (I talked about my intent to try it here) and I am going to make several of these - you'll see them again. I actually finished the chocolate book yesterday, and today I was bitten by the mini book bug (again), and I am going to talk about the teeny tiny books in the front.
Instead of throwing them away I folded the scraps from cutting the paper for the ritter sport mini into signatures and bound them to a book block with the dimensions: 1.2cm x 1cm x 0.6cm, about 1/2 " x 2/5" x 1/5"

still in the press with glued on head bands and a marker ribbon. I had to cut away a big chunk of the band to which the head bands are attached, but they still look huge on this tiny spine :-)
Here I am "trying on" the the raw cover. I like to make the covers too large (also on usual sized books) and only cut them to size after checking the fit of the text block.
I thought the covers had too much space to the spine, but was deceived by the small size.
First cover ~~improved~~ imworsened. Then I cut the covers to length,...
parsed a tiny scrap of leather for the spine. Which was a hell of y job, since I lack the knowledge, experience and skill to do so (and I was using a kitchen knife). Then I covered the cover, glued in the book - first one done.

With the headbands the book was a tack too high for its cover. - It must be possible to do better...
Second book block done - looks better!
Thinned another piece of leather for the book. this time a bigger one, because I wanted it all in leather. Results: Fingers hurting, holes in the leather, but - a piece in the middle of it would be big enough to cover my teeny tiny mini book. But just even so, it could get a bit tight in the end. And so I punched with a hole punch
the frayed holes to nice round eylets. Added some more, too. Glued the leather to the blue Lokta paper I was also using for endsheets on the book block.
And then, I had the weirdest idea of all - hand sewn headbands. - It is a leather volume, right? So nice headbands are a must:
Sorry for the blurred picture, the spot was too small for my automatic focus to catch it... Anyway, this is the first headband done. In the instructions it says: "Be careful not to cut through your thread, when cutting the core to size." I though: Who would be so stupid to cut the thread? And the answer followed immediately: Me:

And this time it turned out well enough, so that I have made the photo above click enlargable (I mean: Click to enlarge!).
In the meantime I covered the cover and: Voilá the second micro book done:
Unfortunately I notice now that the books don't open well - the spaces at between spine and cover are way too small. I should have know from experience that one doesn't scale everything down when working small.
But I am resisting the urge to try a third one.

No books today

Several weeks ago I bought this press that you can see in the picture above. I was a little scared to start to work on it. I had read a lot of different and contradicting hints on how to prepare it for use. And I understood only half of it, because there were so many product names in it that are not known here.
However, yesterday I dared to start to work on it. First, I took the upper plate off the press. There was rust also between the lower and upper plate and I have no idea how I should clean it without removing this first.

I started working on it with a sandpaper made for use on stone and metal. In the picture above I had obviously already started.
The paint only came off reluctantly and underneath more rust was hidden.

This is how it looked like after half an hour work. (At the upper right you see my tool.) I had scratched in the paint, but had not gotten rid of any rust. Also further attampts with pot cleaner: a wire sponge with soap didn't yield totally satisfactory results:

So I bought a set of wire brushes that can be attached to the electric drill machine. It took me a while to understand, how to use these new tools. In the beginning I used to few strength from my arms, and to much speed of the machine. I understood quickly that I need to push the brush onto the plate harder, but it took me half an hour or so to understand that it was rotating to quickly. This is how the plate looked like after half an hour working with the wire brush (visible next to the plate on the right):

And yet another half hours....

What's encouraging about working with the power tool is that all work seems to have at least some effect. With the sandpaper it didn't feel like I was going anywhere. Probably I could get the plate even smoother and remove the last bit of the old primer and rust.
But not today: My arms are (not unpleasantly) weak from pressing the brush against the iron plate and my hands just can't hold the drill anymore (I have some difficulty typing on my computer, actually). I'll have to continue tomorrow.

Since I already worked yesterday on the press, and today again - no books to show off today.

Ritter Sport Mini Books - continued

It has been while now since I cut and sanded down cardboard/wooden chocolate pieces. I wrote an entry here about it. The initial plan was to integrate my own chocolates recipes in the booklets. But I did not seem to be able to set the text in a pleasing way. That lead to me discarding the idea altogether. But I still had all these 'chocolates' and thus decided to make a new (third) batch of the blank Ritter Sport Mini Books that I made last year.

Over the time some problems with these first and second batch became apparent:
If you take a close look (click on the image for an enlarged image) you can see that the thread tears out of the chocolate foil. This is because a) the thread only loops around the thread on a earlier signature without locking - I can do this better by now, and b) the reinforcement I used for the foil (filmoplast) was insufficient.
There are more problems. I had the books on display and all but one of them are ripped. People tend to squeeze and pinch the package in trying to determine whether there is still chocolate in the covers and the foil does not stand this strain. Again I figured, I need to strengthen the foil in some way.

And yet another problem was that the covers opened every now and then at the seams. I had used double sided tape to close them and one could easily push it back together, but still I found this very dissatisfactory. So this time I wanted to do better.
I made this much better models of the chocolate so that it should feel much more like chocolate than with the initial books. I glued the foil to a piece of paper before further proceeding with the binding. And I improved the binding itself. The result can be seen on top, right next to one of the second generation - very ugly. I thought it would be good to have the pages not the size of the chocolate but of the covers. Now I see that this was a bad decision. Also I made the signatures thicker, so that the bulk at the binding should be less. O.k., the bulk was less, but the finished product looks so much less than a mini book! And finally, the paper on the back of the foil makes it a lot sturdier - but you can no longer feel the fake-chocolate inside. I could just as well not have shaped them at all, but simply put a piece of wood inside.

So I'll take this apart again. I think I'll go for the small pages, and sewing station like in the first generation (the pink book). I'll glue paper to the foil, but I'll try a very thin Siam paper (5g per square meter) instead of the office paper (80g per square meter) that I used for the first.
I hope this will work better.

Still only experiments

Finally I am back in my studio. As I said before, I feel a bit threatened by the craft fair I'm going to do in August. So I turned to the more crafty and less artistic side of things. Today I shopped for more cloth and will start to make some photo albums in near future.
But mainly I have had too much paper work to do - forms to fill out, contracts to terminate and to conclude... And the bad thing was that, as an answer to a growing pressure with deadlines for boring stuff, I canceled my free studio time. Which made me feel bad and perform even worse. But today I granted myself about an hour free time and I can feel the wheel turning again. Sure I will soon be on top of things again. Don't know whether this will end up as a project. At the moment I think it will. But I don't want to press it yet. It's important for me to stay patient with myself and continue the work with as few pressure as I can muster.

This little book object is about 3 cm high, 2cm wide. The pages cannot be moved at all. It is fixed like you see it. Neither can the pages be turned, nor could you change the angle at the spine. Also the one page that seems to be loose on the top picture is absolutely firm. You can't turn it without breaking it. The photo below shows the picture that I cut to pieces and made into the booklet:

Linocut with traditional linoleum

Mhm, bis jetzt hat sich noch niemand beschwert, dass ich ganz auf die Englische Sprache umgeschwungen bin. Ich fände es schade, wenn ich dadurch Leser verlieren würde. Eigentlich denke ich die meiste Zeit über Buchbinden in einem Kauderwelsch von Englisch und Deutsch nach, in dem ich am liebsten auch schreiben würde - aber das würde dann wahrscheinlich gar keiner mehr verstehen. Mal schauen, was ich auf Dauer so mache, heute aber mal wieder Englisch. Wenn euch Dinge näher interessieren, die ihr aber nicht (richtig) versteht, gerne nochmal nachfragen!

Yesterday I cut and stamped these new labels. And I took the time to show you the process.

This is how traditional linoleum looks like. According to my knowledge it is available under the name artist's lino in art supply stores. Its advantage compared to the soft lino that I was reviewing before is that is is firm and slightly brittle. This makes is possible to work out finer details. (If you need to go even more detailed you have to switch to harder materials, for example wood.)

The first thing to do is to sand the surface a bit to rub off some of the really hard finish on which it is very easy to slip with the carving knife. In the following picture you see at the left the (not yet completely) sanded lino.
When the lino is evenly sanded and cleaned, I painted them with thinned white water color:
Let it completely dry. - This shouldn't take long and afterwards it looks like this:
The advantage of the whitened surface is that it is easier to see the pencil marks:
You can now directly sketch on the lino with a soft pencil. Don't use sharpened pencils, because their pressure could already effect your prints. If something is not to your liking, you can try to rub it of with a usual rubber or simply wash the pencil marks off with a damp cloth - then you may want to apply white paint again.

There are also techniques to transfer images that you happen to have already onto the lino. You could for example trace an image printed on a sheet of paper with a soft pencil, and then rub it then onto the whitened lino. Then you get a mirror image of course!

Once you have your image on the lino, you start cutting away everything that you want 'white' in your print. (White means in this case the area where you don't want to print.)
A general warning: Remember to cut away from your body and fingers all the time!
You start by tracing all areas with a contour knife. In this case I simply used an exacto knife for this task. Generally you want a sharp knife with a blade not too flexible. Hold it as a slight angle away from the area that will remain on the lino, so that the edges of an area don't break off while printing:
Very fine details like very thin areas between two areas may already be removed that way. Then you take the V-shaped cutting tool and take away more lino. Again I trace the areas first and then take away more of the small areas. I can't mention this often enough: Always push the knife in a direction away from your body and fingers! The tools are very sharp. You will definitely slip at one time and you don't want to risk cutting away fingers or stabbing yourself. Instead of turning the knife (possibly towards your body or fingers) rather turn the lino when cutting around corners.
You don't need to cut very deep, essentially you only need to scratch the surface. Depth is needed to make the coloring of the plate easier. But already a slight dent in the surface will show in the print. So be careful where you rest your knife and how you store your linoleum.
The deeper you cut the more strength you will need, and the more strength you apply the more likely your knife will slip and ruin your work.
Here I am finished with the V-shaped knife and take the U-shaped tool in my hand. With the U-shaped tool it's easier to cut shallow and take away larger areas. I started taking away the interior. I generally like to start with the areas where I have to concentrate more (i.e. slipping is really bad) and pass on to those where I have to concentrate less.
Now I cut around the motif, inside the area where I already took away some lino. When bend the lino will easily break, and then you can use ordinary scissors to cut through the jute on the back to cut out the printing block.
Before you start printing, wash away the white paint!
The printing itself is the same as I have already described it when printing the smiley oracle. In this case you'll probably won't need soap for the paint (another advantage of sanding the lino). Another advantage of this traditional linoleum compared to the soft lino is that you can print with oil based colors (if you think this is an advantage, there are pros and cons regarding the choice of paint).

Afterwards you may want to take care of your tools. I am using oil stones to sharpen my cutting tools. They look like this:
In my set are 4 different stones, ~~with increasing roughness from right to left~~ (note: that's bollocks, they are all the same roughness). You start sharpening your knife on the roughest and proceed to the finest stone. (edit: if you have different roughnesses.) I use mineral oil on these stone, others work also with water. Rub a bit of it on your stone, then we start with the V-shaped tool:
Since it was already sharpened, you just have to have a close look at it to figure out the right angle in which to rub it on the stone. Rub both arms of the V back and forth in the correct angle - maybe ten times. You should have so much oil on your stone that you have a thin film of it on top that you push around with your blade. If you click on the picture you can see it. You do this on all four stone - and your tool is sharp again. Oil the blade lightly, wipe off any excess and store you tool.
Now we take care of the U-shaped knife:
Again you should be able to see the correct angle because it was already sharpened. This time you don't push it back and forth, but sideways, turning the knife around. Also go from the roughest to the smoothest stone, wipe off excess oil and store your tool.

In either case you don't need any strength here. You should rub the blades lightly, just so that you get a faint sound. Don't press too hard. If you feel your knife is rather getting dull than sharp, you are using the wrong angle. Just start over again and don't be afraid to try again. It needs some exercise before your wrist knows how to hold and to turn the knives.

Already some weeks ago (must be two months already) I bought the book "Headbands. How to work them" by Jane Greenfield and Jenny Hille. It's still too early to write a review of the book. I have not yet read much more than the first instruction for this headband with the beads on the edge, above. This was the very first headband I stitched and I must say I am rather pleased with the outcome. - It was much easier than I had anticipated, so it must be a good instruction. But of course the stitching has a lot of flaws. If you click on the image you'll get to my Flickr page and there I've added some tags, hinting at the most obvious mistakes.
The second try was already a slight improvement:

Unfortunately the book block itself is rather crappy. My paper cutter continues to work extremely bad. I think I'll have to turn back to cutting the pages by hand: The cut is not perpendicular to the table, the knife, a replacement I only recently ordered, reached me dented.
And the worst thing about the book that has nothing to do with bad equipment: the edge coloring (swirly blue) is flaking off.

What do you usually do with books that turn out that bad? Take them apart? Keep them to yourself? I'd like to hear your opinions. I usually don't take them apart. This particular one will probably stay unfinished, tossed in some corner of my studio.
I made another book yesterday, another trial with a new technique, which is a complete color fail - I won't show it here. Take it apart? Maybe I will do that.

A little slow today

For some reason - I don't know why - I feel kind of cast down today. It's not like something bad happened, or that I would be thinking sad thoughts. It's just so gray outside, I'm a little tired, a little bored and somehow a little slow with everything I do. Above and below you see pictures of the only book I made today. It is filled with paper that I folded last week. There are still 3 more books to do until I have used up those book blocks that I created in an outburst of working power last Friday.
Besides this book, I also worked on a book for the book arts forum swap. The theme this time is "Something New" and we agreed to all use a material we never worked with before. Possibly one that is not usually used for books. It was me who suggested this swap, and that so many people decided to join it, made me glad and feel more accepted in the community there.
But I am not really convinced by my approach so far. I had an idea that I still think is funny and witty. But it just doesn't seem to work. I'll have to see whether I am still dissatisfied with it tomorrow. (It may be that today is just a bad day for me to judge my work. See above). Luckily there is still some time left, but at the moment I feel like a) I shouldn't have made that suggestion because b) I already made all the books I could have entered in this swap - from which hat should I pull another one?

I mentioned another swap on Friday: Since about two months I am a proud member of the Bookbinding Etsy Street Team - abbreviated by BEST ;-). In the team we are having a book swap every 2 months. The good things about participating: I get a new nice journal or other book from one of my team members. And my book is shown and my name and shop mentioned on our team blog, where you can also find other information about our shops and tips and hints about books and keeping a journal. If you want to see more of the books we make just enter the keyword 'bookbindingteam' into the search box on Etsy.
So this other book went to Canada yesterday. I forgot to make a picture of it, but Rhonda will make some, and then I can show it to you.

Other than that:
I don't think that the Künstlersozialkasse KSK with accept me as an artist. Being accepted would mean I could participate in the governmental social security system with the KSK paying half of it for me. As a self employed artist I am at the moment not fully secured. I don't want to try to explain the totally crazy and complicated German system. Just note that it is important to me.
I asked for and was granted an extension of the time until I have to provide them with evidence of serious artist activity. That means, I have to win an art prize, participate in an juried exibition or silmilar.
I am planning to apply for some shows, but as today I don't know how I should provide the required proof of being an artist until mid May.
I asked for the extension because I thought that until then I might have established a working contract with Vamp & Tramp, and that this contract could be such a piece of evidence. But today I received an Email saying that I won't hear from them until mid of May - I thought they would be back on May first. So that will anyway be too late.
The most frustrating thing is that, apparently, the mistake I made was to apply as a book artist. Those are under suspicion of working as a craftsman book binder. I should have applied as graphic artist or something similar and I probably wouldn't have had these problems.

edit: I forgot to mention that this book, as well as those that I made the last days are all meant to be sold on a craft fair I am going to participate in August. It's still some time until then, but I'll need to fill a two meter long table. Die Freude, mehr als eines zu machen

All die kleinen Büchlein in Reih' und Glied in dieser simplen Schachtel, die ich mal eben für diese Edition gemacht habe - mmhm! Es fällt mir schwer, in einem Wort zu beschreiben, welche Art Freude ich empfinde, wenn ich sie mir anschaue. Also mache ich mal einen Versuch mit mehr Worten, aber erst:

Eine Entschuldigung an meine nicht Deutsch lesenenden Leser dafür, dass dieser Eintrag nur auf Deutsch sein wird. Und eine weitere Entschuldigung an diejenigen, die kein Englisch lesen und den letzten Eintrag nicht verstanden haben. Ich denke darüber nach, diesen Blog nur einsprachig zu führen: Gibt es eigentlich Leser unter euch, die traurig wären, wenn ich komplett auf Englisch wechseln würden?

An apology to all my readers who don't read German. - I have not finally switched to German. Just this post grew that long, that I thought it better to keep it in just one Language. In this post I am trying to find an explanation why I started to find making editions attractive. I might post an English translation of these thoughts in the next days, if I don't find something more interesting to talk about in the meantime.

Als ich letztes Jahr angefangen habe, viele Tagebücher zu binden, war ich stolz darauf, dass keine zwei gleich aussahen. Ich hätte damals wahrscheinlich gesagt: "Ich habe so viele Ideen, dass ich keines zweimal machen muss". Ich dachte, wenn ich wirklich mal mehrere Bücher ganz gleich machen müsste, dann wäre mir das bestimmt total langweilig.
Aber manchmal, wenn ich gerade ein neues Buch fertig gemacht habe, fällt es mir ausgesprochen schwer, darüber nachzudenken, es zu verkaufen. Ehrlich gesagt, fällt es mir sogar schwer, sie aus dem Blick zu lassen. Ich muss es immer wieder, geradezu verliebt anschauen. Und dann wundere ich mich darüber, dass sie wirklich meiner Hände Werk sind.

Mit dem Flügelbuch ist es mir zum Beispiel so gegangen: Ich hatte es erst 2 Monate in meinem Arbeitszimmer stehen, bis ich über die Verwunderung, dass ich fast aus Versehen etwas von diesem Aussehen geschaffen hatte, überwunden hatte. - Und bereit war, das Buch aus der Hand zu geben.

Jemand hat mal über seine Kunstwerke geschrieben: Entweder gefallen sie mir nicht, dann mag ich sie auch für Geld nicht verkaufen, denn ich schäme mich für sie. Oder sie gefallen mir so gut, dass ich sie gar nicht verkaufen mag. Und wenn dann jemand kommt und sich bewundernd über sie äußert, würde ich diesem Menschen das Werk vor Freude am liebsten schenken.
- So geht es mir auch mit vielen meiner Bücher - nur leider lässt sich von einem solchen Verhalten nicht leben.

Das erste Buch, von dem ich von Anfang an vor hatte, mehrere zu machen, war das Buch für den Swap um Weihnachten herum:

Ich hatte so viel Zeit in das Projekt gesteckt (fast 2 Monate), dass ich dachte, ich will das Buch dann nicht einfach sofort weggeben müssen und vielleicht nie wieder davon hören. Und da ich es für einen Tausch gemacht hatte, war natürlich klar, dass ich es weggeben würde.

Die erste echte Edition, die ich dann gemacht habe, habe ich hier ja aufwändig dokumentiert: Das Smiley Orakel

Und ich habe die Langeweile, die ich befürchtet hatte, auch ab zu gespürt. (Vielleicht habe ich mich ja deswegen nicht für eine einzige Farbe entscheiden können.) Aber jetzt ist es so schön, dass ich einige der Büchlein weggeben kann - und ich gebe sie gerne weg, weil ich ja stolz auf sie bin - und sie trotzdem noch hier habe und sie ansehen kann, wenn ich das will.

Als ich mit dem "to touch and to cut" Büchlein angefangen habe, war ziemlich schnell klar, dass ich wieder mehrere machen würde. Die 20 Exemplare waren relativ schnell gemacht - 4 Arbeitstage oder so und ich war fertig. Ich habe schon eines verkauft und 2 verschenkt und habe immernoch so viele. :-) Der Gedanke, dass meine Werke in der Welt und nicht nur in unserem Wohnzimmer zu finden sind, freut mich. Und das es Leute gibt, meine Bücher so gelungen finden, dass sie bereit sind, sie zu kaufen, freut mich auch auf eine ganz besondere Weise.
Ich schaue mir an, wie die satt roten, Büchlein seidig im Licht glänzen, und freue mich auf so vielen Ebenen: Wie sie aussehen, dass ich sie gemacht habe, dass ich sie noch hier habe, dass andere sie haben, dass sie anderen gefallen... Ich freue mich über jedes einzelne und darüber, dass ich mehr als eines habe.

Ich habe durchaus vor, noch one-of-a-kinds zu machen. Die Tatsache, dass es etwas nur ein einziges Mal gibt, erhöht eben nicht nur seinen materiellen (die Arbeitszeit pro Buch ist damit natürlich höher), sondern eben besonders auch seinen gefühlten Wert. Aber ich habe auch vor, in Zukunft mehr Editionen zu machen.

Und meine Scheu, einfach mal zwei Dinge nach dem gleichen Konzept zu machen, habe ich damit auch verloren, wie man an meinen Taschenbüchlein vom Freitag sieht. Und mit einem Bild von den beiden verabschiede ich mich für heute. Bis demnächst!

This morning during the breakfast and general day planning I said to my husband who during the week takes most of the housekeeping load: "I won't work long today, I'll clean up the flat at least partially. Then tomorrow we'll get the rest done quickly and can spend the rest of the weekend without having to care about scrubbing the floor."
O.k., can you guess where it went? Of course the flat is as dirty as before, and I prepared the signatures for 7 books, 3 book blocks are already bound and glued and are waiting to be cut and edge decorated, 2 are still relaxing under some weights (for one swap each, but this is a different story and will be told another time) and 2 are bound without glue and already finished. I took the picture above with the last rays of the evening sun.
- Just so that you know: This was not a short working day.

"to touch and to cut"

Last Saturday I already mentioned it, since then I have been working like a bee. And now my second book that comes in an edition is finished! This time it is an edition of 20. I'll show you some more pictures before I continue babbling about my newest book:

Letzten Samstag habe ich schon erwähnt, dass ich ein einem neuen Projekt arbeite. Seitdem war ich wirklich fleißig und nun ist meine zweite Edition fertig. Dieses Büchlein hat eine Auflage von 20. Bevor ich weiter über mein neuestes Werk erzähle und mich über die Freuden, eine Edition zu machen ergehe, schaut euch doch noch ein paar Bilder an:Sieht ja ganz hübsch aus, höre ich euch sagen: "Aber warum dieser Titel: Berühren und Schneiden. Und Steckt hier überhaupt eine Aussage drin?" Nun ja, dieser Streifen Pergamentpapier, der sich so hübsch über das Cover erhebt, ist nicht an seinen Deckeln festgeklebt. Man kann ihn leicht herausziehen. Und wenn man ihn dann gegen das Licht hält...

You might say: "This looks nice, but ist there any traditional content of this book object? Does it make any sense beyond looking nice. And why this title?" Well, the strip of parchment paper that opens in this flower shape is not glued to the covers and can easily be removed. If you do this and hold it against a light source, you see... ...this. You can see that the lines are not randomly distributed, they are all tangent to i.e. they all touch a common circle. At the same time they all cut through a larger circle with the same center at a common angle. This larger circle can not be seen like the small (touched) one, because actually, they do this for all larger circles. You have to know these circles are there to know that the touching lines are also cutting.

Wenn man es gegen das Licht hält, erkennt man plötzlich, dass die Striche auf dem Papier gar nicht zufällig sind. Alle diese Linien sind Tangten an dem gleichen Kreis, das heißt sie berühren (to touch) diesen. Außerdem - das ist nun etwas Mathematik - schneiden (to cut) sie auch jeden größeren Kreis mit gleichem Mittelpunkt. Weil das also so viele Kreise sind, also anders als der eine Kreis an dem sie alle Tangente sind, nicht eindeutig definiert ist, sieht man die größeren Kreise nicht so, wie man den kleinen sieht. Man muss also wissen, dass die Geraden diese Eigenschaft haben, um zu sehen, dass alle Gerade die berühren, gleichzeitig auch schneiden.

Initially I now wanted to talk about the pleasure of producing an edition. I am surprised by myself that I rather like it! It is so nice that now I can sell the books and still have them. (I always have a hard time parting with my works.) But now this blog entry has already grown so long, that I'll spare all my philosophical thoughts about that for a later entry.

And I just have to give you this piece of information before finishing this entry: I was featured with one of my books on the Etsy Front Page for the first time!

Yet Another New Project

Do you see these long strips of paper on which I am currently working? I received them from vuscor - a big thanks! - already some time ago. They are beautiful parchment paper. I am still experimenting what to do with the scraps. Initially I wanted to use them for the first joint book by me and my husband. But for one I'll need larger paper for that and furthermore he has a demanding day job which lets this project proceed only slowly. So now I am experimenting with different concepts...
And - yes, I know, I desperately need to tidy up my working desk. But tonight I am celebrating my second youngest sister's engagement; and at the moment you are reading this I am on the road to my parent's house.

Ich muss dringend meinen Schreibtisch aufräumen. Seht ihr die langen Streifen schönes Pergamentpapier auf der Arbeitsfläche? Die habe ich von Vuscor geschenkt bekommen - vielen Dank nochmal dafür! - und ich bin gerade dabei, mit ihnen zu experimentieren. Ursprünglich wollte ich es für ein Sprachexperimentbuch benutzen, das ich gerade zusammen mit meinem Mann erarbeite, aber dafür brauche ich dann wohl doch etwas größere Seiten. Und außerdem wird es wohl bis dahin noch eine Weile dauern, und es brennt mir unter den Nägeln, etwas Schönes mit dem Material anzufangen.

Paper - Take a look at my stashes

I am not very pleased with the progress of my newest chocolaty project. I printed the text for inside yesterday, but discarded the idea altogether because I like none of it: Neither the text nor the idea to put it into this project. I'll have to think again about it. A good time to reorganise my paper stashes. All pictures here are links to their Flickr page where I can add notes (which I did) and tell you what types of papers they are.
This doesn't seem like my lucky day today. It rains, and it is rather dark. At least it isn't snowing. - So the pictures are a little dark. Sorry about that. I hope you'll enjoy my papers anyway. Thanks for reading!

Irgendwie war meine neueste Idee zum Schokobuch nicht so der Hit. Ich habe gestern den ganzen Tag daran gearbeitet, bin mit den Ergebnissen aber so unzufrieden, dass ich diese Idee erstmal aufgegeben habe. Jetzt muss ich nochmal neu nachdenken. Ein guter Tag, um meine Papiersammlung neu zu organisieren. Alle Bilder hier sind links zu ihrer Flickr Seite, wo ich (mit hilfe von notes im Bild selbst) nochmal genauer sage, um was für Papiere es sich handelt.
Irgendwie ist heute der Wurm drin. Es regnet, es ist dunkel, und so sind auch die Bilder etwas dunkel und grau geworden, wie der Himmel und meine Stimmung. Ich hoffe, ihr habt trotzdem ein bisschen Freude an den vielen schönen Papieren, die ich zu zeigen hab'. Bis demnächst und ein schönes Wochenende!

Easter Baskets and Toffifay Scrolls

Ich wünsche allen frohe Ostern gehabt zu haben! Für mich ist Ostern eindeutig das schönste Fest im Jahr (viel besser als Weihnachten). Dieses Jahr waren wir wirklich alle zusammen: Meine Schwestern hatten alle ihre Partner dabei, und auch meine Nichte war da. Insgesamt waren wir damit zu 12 Leute am Kaffeetisch. Die Papierkörbchen habe ich übrigens nach einer Anleitung von The Spotted Sparrow gemacht - danke dafür!

I hope you had some nice days, too, while I celebrated with my family my favorite Holiday, Easter. We had fabulous weather and I loved that we were all together: my parents, my sisters all with partners, my grandmother and my nice - which made 12 persons in total. I made them the paper baskets you can see above following a tutorial by The Spotted Sparrow - thanks for that again!

Shortly before Easter I made these mini books/scrolls or whatever you'd like to call them. This was the first time for me I worked with polymer clay. It was really fun, though not as easy as I had anticipated. I am rather frustrated that I didn't get the colors and shapes to be more convincing. Above and below you see pictures from the first batch before firing. I was still experimenting with how to fashion the closures then.Gerade noch so vor Ostern habe ich diese Sammlung von Mini-Schriftrollen gemacht. Für mich war es das erste Mal, das ich überhaupt mit Fimo gearbeitet habe. Es hat schon Spaß gemacht, war aber schwieriger als ich gedacht hatte. So richtig zufrieden bin ich auch nicht: Irgendwie sehen sie eben doch nicht wie echt aus. Die Farben stimmen nicht so ganz, und außerdem sehen sie ganz schön begrabbelt aus.
Jede der Formen enthält einen Streifen Papier, auf dem ein Spruch, Zitat oder kleine Weisheit steht. Die Bilder oben sind noch vor dem Brennen aufgenommen. Die folgenden sind von hinterher.

Becoming Büchertiger. Wie ich zum Büchertiger wurde

Das kleine Büchlein enthält nun einen Teil meiner persönlichen Geschichte. Es erzählt, wie ich mich entschieden habe, nicht als Mathematikerin Geld zu verdienen, sondern mich statt dessen einer der brotlosesten Künste überhaupt zuzuwenden: der Buchkunst.
Das Projekt ist nicht ganz neu. Ich habe im Januar schonmal davon erzählt. Jetzt ist es endlich vollständig fertig geworden. Weil es doch mehr Material gab, als auf die ursprüngliche Seitenzahl gepasst hat, habe ich nochmal 4 Lagen dazugebunden. Dass das überhaupt möglich ist, ist einer der Vorteile dieser mittelalterlichen Bindetechnik. In ein modernes Buch, sei es mit festen oder weichen Deckeln, kann man nicht einfach später doch noch die Seitenzahl verdoppeln.
This small book contains now part of my story: It tells about me deciding not to earn money as a mathematician but rather to starve as a book artist. This is not a completely new project, I already blogged about it in January. But now it is finally completely finished. As you may have noticed I doubled the amount of pages in the book. Luckily I chose this medieval binding style for the book so that it was possible. Otherwise I would have had to make a second volume. I like that I thus demonstrated one of the advantages of this binding style.

Let me talk a bit about the contents: It is not only my story, but foremost an experiment with minimalistic storytelling. I decided to use no text, and not only to draw myself as a stick figure, but as a stick figure without a facial expression. Therefore expressing emotions was the most difficult part. Thus, beside the posture of the figures, the colors became very important. The color of my dress as well as the background colors change with the mood. Below you see in the first picture: "Binding books distracts from the worries and problems of every day and is fun" and in the second: "Too worried to sleep." Dieses Buch ist vor allem auch ein Experiment mit minimalistischer Erzählweise. Ich wollte auf jeden Text verzichten (hat nicht ganz geklappt: einmal gibt es Text, der aber als Bild funktioniert - ich stelle einen Menschen dar, der viel kompliziertes Zeug erzählt, indem ich ihn richtig viel in Textformat sagen lasse - und es gibt einzelne Wörter, die ab und zu als Erklärung dienen sollen). Außerdem habe ich mich nicht nur als eine Art Strichmännchen dargestellt, sondern auch noch als ein Strichmännchen ohne Gesichtsausdruck! Deshalb sind Farben besonders wichtig in diesem Büchlein, neben der Körperhaltung natürlich. Oben seht ihr meinen Versuch darzustellen, wie am Anfang das Buchbinden wie eine Insel in einem unschönen Alltag und willkommene Ablenkung war.

Then, yesterday, I set up my workspace like you can see below and started to finish the book: I used my maxi book to test colors, and sometimes to try a better and more precise sketch than in the storyline sketch in my sketchbook.

So sah gestern morgen mein Arbeitsplatz aus, als ich gerade begonnen habe zu arbeiten. Das Maxibuch habe ich benutzt, um Farben auszuprobieren und um für einige Bilder nochmal detailliertere Skizzen zu machen. auf der linken Seite liegen mein Skizzenbuch mit der 'Storyline' und der Teil des Buchs, der schon fertig ist. Auf der rechten Seite liegen meine Stifte und die leeren Seiten.
Zwischendrin gab's lecker Mittagessen am Arbeitsplatz ...
... und am Ende des Tages sah diese Seite des Maxibuchs so aus:

If I could take back one of the choices I made for this book and start over again, I would choose a different paper. I like the touch and feel of this rag paper. But due to its structure it was hard to give any detail to the tiny sketches.

Wenn ich eine Entscheidung nochmal neu treffen könnte, würde ich anderes Papier wählen: Dieses Papier mag ist zwar sehr gerne, weil es sich so schön anfühlt, aber es hatte eigentlich zu viel Struktur für so kleie Bilder. Mit einem glatteren Papier wäre es einfacher gewesen, mehr Details in die Bilder zu bringen.

Zigarettenautomatenpoesie und dat pöggsken

Ich habe ja schon erzählt, dass ich letzte Woche einen neuen Sprachkurs begonnen habe. Da war die Beschäftigung mit der eigenen Sprache irgendwie auch naheliegend. Ich bin im Münsterland zur Schule gegangen, wo man Münsterländer Platt spricht (oder gesprochen hat). Natürlich habe ich nie Platt sprechen gelernt, aber die Großeltern einiger Freundinnen, die noch mit auf dem Hof gelebt haben, sprachen zum Teil gar kein Hochdeutsch und auch auf dem Markt hört man das Plattdeutsche noch. Außerdem musste ich, wie alle Grunschüler im Münsterland, das folgende Gedicht auswendig lernen. Den allgemeinen Sound dieser Sprache habe ich also ziemlich im Ohr, und freue mich immer mal, wenn ich das wieder höre. Hier nun das versprochene Gedicht, von August Wibbelts:

Dat Pöggsken sitt in'n Sunnenschien,
O, wat is dat Pöggsken fien
Met de gröne Bücks!

Das Gedicht kam auch als Titelseite in mein heutiges Buch:Above you see the front page of the journal I made this morning. What you probably can't see is the poem written there. It is in the lower German language spoken near Münster in Westphalia where I went to school. Though I can't speak the language (and never could), you can't live there for 10 years and go there to school, without getting to know the general sound, and learning to understand basics. Hearing it feels like coming home to me. And many words also made their way into everyday language. Here you can hear how it sounds. Can you guess who are Pöggsken and Grauseman?
This weekend was marked by thinking about the German language anyway. We visited a exhibition called "Here German is spoken" about various aspects of the language. At the end I bought from an old cigarette vending machine this packet of poems. I like the idea! (Though not really the poems we found inside.) Das ganze Wochenende war vom Nachdenken über die deutsche Sprache geprägt. Das Haus der Geschichte in Bonn hat gerade die Ausstellung "Hier spricht man Deutsch" noch bis Anfang Mai verlängert. Die haben wir uns gestern angeschaut (durchaus empfehlenswert!) und am Ende aus einem ausrangierten Zigarettenautomaten eine Packung Gedichte gezogen. Der Gedichte selbst sind vielleicht nicht so prall (es holpert ganz schön und erreicht allenfalls Büttenredenniveau), aber die Idee hat mir gefallen!

Some new journals, paperwork, spring mood

I am much excited and elated: Spring finally started here, with warmer weather and a little bit of sun every now and then. (Winters are very dark and gray here.) Matching my spring mood I made some journals with distressed leather as outward covering material and a grass-green fleece lining. The one you can see above is for personal use. But I made two more (and I have already the paper torn and weighted down for a fourth variant) for my Etsy Store. This is another photo of my book:Schon die ganze Woche habe ich richtig gute Laune, die kann mir selbst der Berg von Papierkram nicht nehmen, den ich im Moment vor mir herschiebe, doch dazu später mehr. Gründe zum Freuen gibt's genug: Das Smiley Oracle ist endlich fertig und hat einige Freunde gefunden. Und ich habe endlich wieder Zeit, Tagbücher zu binden! Das, das ihr hier oben sehen könnt, ist für mich und meinen Eigengebrauch gedacht, ich fange nämlich morgen mit einem Niederländisch Sprachkurs an.
Das Buch, bzw. die verwendeten Materialien repräsentieren für mich so richtig Frühling: Das Leder erinnert mich an meine Lederjacke, die ich auch wirklich heute wieder zum ersten Mal anhatte, und das Vlies darunter ist so richtig Frühlingsgrün - und warm, wie man es eben im Frühling manchmal noch braucht. Weil es mir so Spaß gemacht hat, habe ich mit den gleichen Materialien gleich noch zwei weitere Bücher für meinen Etsy Laden gemacht, aber natürlich sind auch da keine zwei gleich. Ich habe auch schon Papier für ein viertes fertig macht. Mal schauen, ob ich das gleich auch noch verwurste.

Das nächste Buch ist eines derer, die ich verkaufen will:

I am much excited about going "back to school" again and I'm so looking forward to learn some Dutch. Dymphie, writer of the blog Papieren Avonturen, already offered to endure some beginner's Dutch when we meet in May (we are going to participate in Nina Judin's Coptic Workshop (in English) - maybe you want to come, too?). Over all my joy about learning again, I have to keep in mind that I have a history of not learning languages too well and easily. Here is the list of language courses I took so far (in the ordering they come to my mind):

I started to learn English as my first foreign language at school. I usually had to struggle not to fail to pass the exams, somehow managed to get through, and by now I feel quite comfortable speaking English
I took several Spanish courses while at university and I'd say, I can communicate in Spanish. That means I have some difficulty keeping a conversation going, and I'm totally at a loss when too many people are speaking at once, but I can communicate my basic thoughts and needs.
I learned French in school, and thanks to many vacations spent in the Brittany I still understand a bit of the language - I can hardly say anything, though
I learned Latin and ancient Greek as dead languages, the first still in school the other at university, I was never were able to speak. A bit of vocabulary and unnecessary knowledge is all that is left from that experience - I enjoyed learning Greek a lot, though! It was the first time I took pleasure in learning a language and this got me hooked :-)
I took courses in Polish for a year, but d**n, this is a difficult language! Their grammar has 5(!) genders, not just 2 or three like decent languages ;-) I can hardly say anything in Polish; at least I can read and pronounce it - that makes it a lot easier to use language guides. I still wish I could speak Polish. I am much interested in Poland and Polish culture. But I gave up learning this language.
I tried completely unsuccessfully to learn modern Hebrew. That was almost a decade ago, and I remember some of the letters, and very few words (maybe 10 or 15), but never was I able to fluently read or speak freely.
I learned some Italian on a car ride to Italy as an audio course. I had a lot of fun learning to say: "I have nothing to declare", although at that point, the Schengen treaty had already been in action for several years. This course was astonishingly effective, and I was able to speak to people the usual tourist stuff, and book rooms even on the telephone. Probably because I already knew some Spanish. That also had its side effects: I knew what to say, as long as the conversation went along the situations in the audio course. But when people asked me something unexpected I switched to Spanish. When we were in Parma we wanted to stay in a small hotel, but the reception was closed, and I had to call the owner on his phone. After having everything fixed, the owner asked me (at the telephone) "Where are you now?" - in Italian of course. This was not part of the standard, room resercation dialogue. Without hesitation I answered: "Estamos aquí, directamente en frente." (Spanish, meaning: We are here, directly in front.) He, apparently and with good reason, was still thinking I was speaking Italian, was rather alarmed, and asked back: "In Fierence?!" - Florence was several hours away by car. From there on the conversation went from bad to worse. Me trying desperately to make myself understood, speaking faster and faster, resulting in him understanding less and less. He managed to interrupt me at some point and we agreed simply to meet in two hours, so that he could give me the keys, without him ever understanding that we were directly in front of his hotel.

I like to start to learn a new language, and I am much excited about starting with a new one tomorrow! - But I am also a bit scared about how it will go this time. I'm preparing by listening to Dutch folk songs (wat zullen we drinken? and kaap'ren varen) ;-)

With the Smiley Oracle being finished (and apparently well-liked), much to look forward to, and the nice beginning spring weather, the paperwork that's looming in front of me can't bother me much. Though it better should: I have to fill out my tax forms, and I have to prove that I am an artist (not a craftsperson) to the German officials (to the KSK to be correct). On this depends a lot for me at the moment. Essentially whether I earned any money at all since I started out in the book arts, or whether I'll have to give it up because I will starve myself this way. Ah, better not to think about this and rather show you some more pictures of the third spring journal I made. Thanks for reading!

Direkt hier obendrüber ist das zweite leere Buch, das ich gestern gemacht und bei Etsy eingestellt habe.
Im englischen Teil oben, habe ich gerade die Liste der Sprachkurse aufgezählt, die ich schonmal angefangen habe. Die Liste kann ganz eindrucksvoll klingen, aber eigentlich ist das eine Geschichte des Scheiterns: Es ist ja nicht so, als hätte ich diese Sprachen alle gelernt ;-) Aber die lange Liste zeigt, dass ich schon immer gerne mehr Sprachen sprechen können wollte. Ich finde es immer ein bisschen peinlich, wenn ich in einem unserer Nachbarländer bin, und die Landessprache nicht wenigstens ein bisschen sprechen kann. In Belgien und den Niederlanden werde ich demnächst öfter sein - ich hoffe, das wird mir als Motivation ausreichen, auch abends noch ein bisschen zu büffeln, wenn mein Liebster schon zur Freizeit übergegangen ist.

Eigentlich müsste ich statt lauter Tagebücher zu binden, Niederländisch zu lernen, oder neue Projekte zu planen, einiges an Papierkram erledigen: Meine Steuererklärung muss ich fertig machen und der KSK beweisen, dass ich als Künstlerin tätig bin (nicht "nur" als Kunsthandwerkerin). Wie beweist man sowas? Ich kann ihnen nachweisen, dass ich a) Kunstpreise gewonnen habe (nein, habe ich nicht), b) an Ausstellungen mit der Jury teilgenommen habe (da will ich mich gerade auf 2 bewerben; das muss ich mal wirklich machen; aber innerhalb der Zeitfrist, die sie mir gesetzt haben, werden ich wohl nirgends zugelassen sein) oder c) Gutachen einer Kommission einer Kunsthochschule beibringen. Auf Punkt c) werde ich mich also wohl stürzen müssen. Wie ich allerdings eine Kommission zusammen kriegen soll, weiß ich auch noch nicht.
Von der Zulassung zur KSK hängt für mich gerade eine Menge ab. KSK ist kurz für Künstlersozialkasse. Anders als der Name klingt, ist es nicht eigentlich eine Kasse. Aber wenn ich da zugelassen werde, dann werde ich von meiner Krankenkasse, der Rentenkasse und allen anderen Sozialkassen wie ein Arbeitnehmer behandelt, und die KSK bezahlt die Abgaben, die sonst der Arbeitgeber zahlen würde. Davon hängt für mich eine Menge ab. Eigentlich will die KSK alle Kreativen unterstützen (auch Schreiberlinge, Reporter, freie Journalisten usw.) und in den ersten Jahren der Berufstätigkeit verlangt sie auch noch keinen Berufserfolg. - Außer bei den Künstlern, die keinen Hochschulabschluss haben, und in den Verdacht geraten, eher Handwerk zu betreiben. Die müssen offenbar von Anfang an einen Erfolg nachweisen :-(
Aber davon will ich mir heute nicht die Laune verderben lassen. - Lieber mache ich mich an die 4. Variante der Leder-Vlies Bücher.

Maxibuch

Das Bild habt ihr gestern schon gesehen: Da schneide ich einen riesigen Textblock zu. Am Ende hatte er ungefähr das Format: 48cm x 35cm und enthält 144 Seiten.

I posted the picture above already yesterday: Me cutting a gigantic book block to size. Well, it's gigantic compared to other books I usually make. In the end it measures now: 48cm x 35 cm and has 144 pages. In the picture below I am preparing to make the case.
Hier oben schneide ich gerade die Pappen für das Buch zurecht. Und unten presst es schon ein. Weil ich nicht so eine große Presse habe, muss es unter einigen Lexikonbänden liegen. Seht ihr das Buch? Brauner Rücken, ganz unten, liegt auf der Tischkante. Über den Rücken zieht sich ein Streifen von dem Eulen-Vorsatzpapier mit dem ich auch die Deckelinnenseiten überklebt habe.
Since I didn't have a press big enough for that book I put it under some volumes of the encyclopedia Brockhaus. Can you see the book at all? It is bound in a fine brown cloth. On the spine (and actually also the covers) it is decorated with a strip of the paper that I used as endpapers, too. Here you have a look at the interior pages:

Und nun noch ein paar Bilder vom fertigen Buch. Entschuldigt bitte die relativ schlechte Qualität. - Ich hatte nicht die geringste Chance, das Ding in meine Lichtbox zu bekommen.
Hier habe ich mal ein paar alte Bücher auf das neue gelegt, damit ihr sehen könnt, um wieviel größer das neue ist, im Vergleich zu den Alten: das rote koptisch gebundene, ist so etwa meine Standardgröße. Derwinzige kleine Fleck rechts davon, ist das kleinste Buch, das ich bislang gebunden habe.
Die Seiten sind, wie ihr unten sehen könnt, verschiedenfarbig und aus einem saugfähigen, dicken Papier, das ich sonst gerne als Ein- und Unterlage benutze, wenn ich noch etwas feuchte Arbeiten einpresse. Es sieht nicht nur krumpelig aus, sondern ist es auch ein wenig. Als Vorsätze habe ich Kraftpapierbögen genommen, und auf dem Bild unten könnt ihr auch die Spiegel gut sehen.

Ein neues Kapitel

Das Smiley Orakel ist endlich bei Etsy eingestellt. Ich habe noch eine Menge an Zeug drum herum gemacht, von dem ich ein paar Dinge mit zu den Büchern gelegt habe, die bis gestern bestellt wurden. Den Rest werde ich wohl erstmal behalten.

Außerdem habe ich jede Menge Fotos gemacht - im Prinzip von jedem Büchlein einzeln, damit ich je nach Bedarf, sie einzeln bei Etsy einstellen kann. Einen Teil der Bilder könnt ihr in meinem Flickr photostream sehen.
The Smiley Oracle is finally listed in my Etsy store. The last days I have been making ephemeral stuff, most of which I will keep to myself for now: bookmarks, pencil holders, and wine stem markers or keyring pendants.

Furthermore I made the 'manual' booklets with a small explanation about the oracle and some facts about me, and I made some 'choice knifes' that are supposed to help you with determining your oracle. The very fist attempt was still made out of wood, but this didn't look nice enough, so I changed back to cardboard - you can see them at the lower left in the picture above.
And I took a lot of photos, from each of the books, so that I can put them up on Etsy individually. You can find some of them in my Flickr photostream.
Finally, I put it all the stuff into a box onto my shelf. I'll be glad, to only open that box for sales from now on!

Und dann, am Ende, habe ich noch eine Liste gemacht, von den Nummern der Bücher, mit den Farben der Seiten, Slipcases und Deckel, habe die Büchlein eingewickelt und von außen nummeriert und in einer Kiste ins Regal gestellt. - Endlich ist das Kapitel abgeschlossen!
Und dann habe ich mich gleich in neue Abenteuer gestürzt: Auf Etsy gehöre ich dem Buchbinder Team an. Wir haben einen eigenen Blog und eine eigene Flickr-Gruppe. Und da veranstalten wir ein "Essbares Buch Festival". Was ein essbares Buch ist? Nun ja, es ist auf jeden Fall essbar, und entweder ist ein wirklich wie ein Buch, mit Seiten und was drauf geschrieben und so, oder es sieht aus wie ein Buch (lässt sich aber nicht öffnen oder benutzen) oder es respräsentiert ein Buch.
Hier ist der Pool auf Flickr, den wir dazu eingerichtet haben und hier gibt es nochmal mehr Infos (leider auf Englisch). Es können alle, auch Nichtmitglieder mitmachen! Das folgende ist mein Beitrag.

The ruler I am holding in my hands in 60 cm long. While the oracles were too small for my cutting machine, this here is too big to fit beneath the 40cm blade. Production of a Small Edition - Day 28: All books and slipcases done

Endlich ist der letzte Schuber fertig geworden! Im Moment bin ich dabei, einiges an Zusatzmaterial fertig zu machen: Kleine Beiheftchen (mit Bedienungsanleitung und einigen Infos über mich und dieses Buch), Lesezeichen, Schlüsselanhänger, auch ein Stiftebecher wie ihr ihn oben auf dem Bild sehen könnt ist dabei. Alles noch mit Smileyresten.
Bis zum Samstag habt ihr noch Zeit, eines der Büchlein billiger und mit einigen dieser Beigaben zu bekommen.
Und dann freue ich mich schon darauf, ab nächster Woche was anderes zu machen und euch von anderen Sachen zu erzählen. Hier noch zum Abschluss ein Bild, das ich während des Beziehens meines letzten Schubers gemacht habe:

The Smiley Oracle - Talking the Business Talk

Half of the slipcases are ready now. Time to talk a bit about the business half of the fun. I was surprised and happy that some of you already asked me whether I was going to sell the Smiley Oracle books, and the answer is "yes". I will put them in my Etsy-shop, once all the slipcases are done, probably on the next weekend.

Since this is the first time I am trying to sell such an edition I decided to try a graded price system, with the first books offered at a price less than the average I want to make, and I'll raise the price of the books according to how fast I can sell them.

I felt much supported by the many friendly comments on my blog, and want to give you something back. So I make you this offer:If you buy a smiley oracle now, before I put them in my Etsy shop, you'll get them for 35€ (instead of at least 41€) plus shipment (see below). A user manual with an artist statement will be included. And you will additionally get some ephemera that I stamped, cut, and glued as well.
"...And on top I put this really sharp kitchen knife - isn't that great, Bob?" - "That's incredible Susy..." Oops, wrong channel ;-)

Mittlerweile sind 8, also die Hälfte der Schuber fertig. Es wird Zeit ein wenig über die geschäftliche Seite dieser Unternehmung zu sprechen. Vor allem da ich, zu meiner Überraschung und Freude, schon Anfragen bekommen habe, ob ich die Büchlein verkaufen werde und wie viel sie kosten werden.

Die Antwort ist: Ja, ich werde sie verkaufen. Ich habe vor, sie in meinen Etsy-Shop zu stellen, sobald wirklich alles fertig ist. - Wahrscheinlich am kommenden Wochenende.

Production of a Small Edition - Day 23: Almost there

I finished binding the books in two days and started yesterday with making the slipcase(s). I experimented with a new construction method (which yielded 4 slipcases that I threw away immediately) but turned back to the initial construction in the end. Somehow this seems to happen frquently in my life: I start with a naive approach to something, then I discover an instruction, I start to learn the instruction and when I finally understand how it is meant to be done I realize that my approach was actually better suited to my problem.
To give you an idea of what I am talking about here are some rough sketches of the constructions. I am making my slipcases according to this sketch:
At the hatched parts I thin the cardboard by pushing off a part of it. This is essentially how I learned to make boxes.
The following is a sketch of a construction I found as a tutorial in one of my books:
No cardboard is thinned here. The main difference is that no longer an extension of the spine serves as top and bottom, but extensions of the sides. No taps are glued here. I found this harder to do and to yield less satisfying results.

I could talk for hours about what decisions went into the final design of the covers and the slipcase of the edition, what ideas I discarded, and when I turned back to initial ideas. But I don't want to bore you with details you might not want to know. I uploaded several pictures of the pre-edition and the first finished book to Flickr and talked there about their differences. Please have a look there. I will happily answer any questions you might have, either here or there.

The title on the slipcase is laser printed, cut out, and glued on, by the way. All books are signed and numbered. And now I'm off to construct 15 more slipcases.

So, das erste Büchlein (das zufällig die Nummer 14 trägt) ist nun komplett fertig. Wie ihr sehen könnt, habe ich einige Design-Entscheidungen nochmal anders gefällt: Die Schuber haben nun doch keinen Ausschnitt zum Reingreifen, sie tragen den Titel und meinen Namen und die Cover der Büchlein bleiben blank.
Was ist der Stand der Dinge? Nun ja, ich habe die 16 Bücher an 2 Tagen gebunden, gestern habe ich dann Schuber gemacht, und zwar vor allem für den Mülleimer. Weil ich ja nun wirklich alles gut machen wollte, habe ich nochmal Anleitungen dafür gewälzt. Dann habe ich angefangen, nach der Anleitung, die ich hatte, Schuber zu machen. Das brauchte einiges an Fehlversuchen, bis ich es endlich raushatte - und dann beschlossen habe, dass mein erster Ansatz ohne Anleitung doch noch der beste war. Die beiden Konstruktionen habe ich oben als grobe Skizze mal verglichen. Die erste Skizze zeigt, wie ich die Schuber vorher und wieder mache, einfach eine geritzte Schachtel, die an einer Seite offen ist. Die zweite entspricht der Anleitung speziell für Schuber - insgesamt war das schwieriger, ordentlich zu machen, und hatte eine weniger stabile Konstruktion zur Folge.

Nach all dem Hin- und Her habe ich erst einen Schuber fertig. Von diesem Teil meiner Arbeit erhoffe ich mir eigentlich den größten Lernerfolg. Ich habe früher zwar schon ein paar Schachteln gemacht, aber noch nie solche. Ich hoffe, ich werde einigermaßen schnell fertig. Ich werde euch auf jeden Fall auf dem Laufenden halten.

Ich könnte jetzt noch stundenlang erzählen, wie ich welche Entscheidungen getroffen habe, aber das habe ich im Prinzip schon auf Flickr getan. Da habe ich die Bücher der Prä-Edition hochgeladen und alle Unterschiede aufgezählt. Wenn ihr also mehr wissen wollt, schaut doch da mal vorbei! Fragen beantworte ich gerne, entweder hier oder dort.
Dann werde ich mich wohl mal wieder an die Arbeit machen...

Via the book arts mailing list I received the following Email this morning by Judith Hoffman who was herself forwarding a message by Marc Snyder, excerpt:

I visited the webpage this morning and made some of the booklets, the results can be seen in the picture above. I think this is a fun idea! Heute kam auf der Buchkunst Mailingliste (Englisch) ein Hinweis auf die Webseite von FIMP, wo man eine Reihe von Mini-Büchern von Künstlern herunterladen und dann selbst zusammensetzten kann. Das erste Bild oben zeigt einige, die ich heute morgen gleich gemacht habe. Teilnehmende Künstler sind: Pati Bristow, Ginger Burrell, Warren Craghead III, Marti Haykin, Adele Henderson, Robert Hirsch, Judith Hoffman und Marc Snyder.
Ich finde das eine lustige Idee und beteilige mich mit meinem Minibüchlein HongKong (im Bild hier oben zu sehen). Leider musste ich die Dateil ziemlich groß lassen, damit einige der Scans lesbar bleiben, daher sind es 7 MB geworden. Das ist durchaus im Rahmen dessen, was man auch auf der besagten Webseite runterladen kann, aber ich hätte es gerne kleiner gehabt. Production of a Small Edition - Day 20+21

Heute ist Tag 21, und so liegen die Seiten zwischen ihre Deckel gelegt auf meinem Schreibtisch und warten darauf, gebunden zu werden. Ich zeige euch noch ein paar Bilder vom Deckelbauen gestern:

So sieht der von hinten mit Papier bezogene Stoff nun aus. Den kann man nun getrost mit Leim bestreichen, ohne dass der durch den Stoff durchschlägt und vorne hässliche Flecken macht.

This is how the backed cloth looks like. The paper on the back protects the front from getting stained by applying glue. All three sorts of cloth that I chose for this project is pure cotton, by the way.

Auf dem Bild sieht man meinen Arbeitsplatz als ich gerade angefangen habe, für jeden der nun durchnumerierten, ungebundenen Buchblöcke das Bezugsmaterial auszuwählen. Die fertig zugeschnittenen Deckel liegen am linken Rand des Bildes. Von außen werden sie mit dem Stoff bezogen, von innen klebe ich ein gefaltetes Blatt dagegen, so dass man eine Art Vorsatz bekommt.

In the photo above you see my desk while choosing the covers for each book. Each unbound book block now has recieved a number (this does not correspond to the ordering in which they were printed). On the left hand side you see a stack of already cut cardboard for the covers. I checked them a last time, wrote the number of a book block on them, cut some covering cloth to shape and chose as endpapers some folded sheets of paper from those that I had in spare for more misprints. I'm going to glue a folded, not a single sheet to the inside covers.

Production of a Small Edition - Day 16: Backed Cloth

I have been backing cloth the last days, or rather the last day (I have been much distracted since Tuesday.) A good tutorial how to back cloth (or fine paper) by Cathryn can be found at the book arts forum for registered users. Above you see the entry door to my studio and how it looked like this morning.

Die letzten Tage habe ich also Stoff mit Papier hinterklebt. Für diejenigen unter euch, die auch englischen Anleitungen folgen können und einen Zugang zum Book Arts Forum haben, gibt's hier ein schönes Tutorial von Cathryn. Die Fotos oben zeigen die Tür zu meinem Arbeitszimmer heute morgen und eines der Bretter von dem ich ein fertiges Stück Stoff gerade abziehe.

Production of a Small Edition - Day 14 Finally Finished with Printing

Yesterday I finally finished printing. As I said before, I recorded some of the printing process on Monday, and I am going to show you some of this today.
Initially I wanted to cut all the material together to one video. But I had problems with editing the sound file. In the first clip you still see a bit of the problem. Since the sound is going to be important I decided to do it like you see it here now. With a few snippets instead of one video. Please apologize that you have to click several times now.

Gestern bin ich endlich mit dem Drucken fertig geworden. Zeit, nochmal Rückschau zu halten und festzuhalten, was ich gelernt habe. Am Montag habe ich ein bisschen was von dem Prozess als Video festgehalten.Eigentlich wollte ich es als ein einziges Filmchen zusammenschneiden, aber ich hatte immer wieder Probleme mit dem Ton: Im ersten Videoclip ist jetzt das Standbild mit dem Text noch drin, aber da fängt der Ton schon an. Je länger der Film wurde, desto schlimmer wurde das Problem. Und da der Ton in dem Video wichtig ist, habe ich mich also für diese Lösung mit zerhackten Dateien entschieden. Bitte entschuldigt, dass ihr also gleich mehrmals klicken müsste, um diesem Eintrag ganz folgen zu können. Aber jetzt geht's los:

Einige Kommentare dazu:

Die Farbe, die ich da benutze ist Linoldruckfarbe von der Firma Nerchau auf Wasserbasis. Die behaupten, die Farbe sei lichtecht - na, glauben wir's mal. Das Schöne ist jedenfalls, dass sie auf der Glasplatte lange offen bleibt, also nicht sofort antrocknet.
Deshalb kann ich auch gleich die Farbe für einen ganzen Tag anrühren. Aus dem großen Tropfen oben, ziehe ich immer nur ein bisschen Farbe nach unten auf die Fläche.
Ich habe auch Farbe auf Ölbasis, aber da ich dieses Plastikzeug (Softlino und Stempelmaterial) benutze, fällt diese Option von vorherein aus. (Auf den Packungen steht drauf man soll nur wasserbasierte Farben verwenden. Ich vermute, die Druckformen würden das Reinigungs-Lösungsmittel nicht vertragen.)
Ich füge der Farbe Spülmittel hinzu, richtig gesehen. Die Softlinoleum und vor allem die Druckformen aus Stempelmasse sind ja aus Plastik und das stößt Wasser ein wenig ab. Schonmal versucht, ein Stück Plastik wirklich gleichmäßig mit Wasser zu benetzen? Da bilden sich immer wieder Tropfen auf der Oberfläche. Um das zu verhindern oder zumindest den Effekt zu verringern, dient das Spülmittel. - Funktioniert gut!

Was habe ich sonst so gelernt? Vieles davon liest sich ziemlich trivial. Ich habe endlich einige der Dinge, die sich in dem Buch, nach dem ich Drucken gelernt habe schon gelesen habe, wirklich verstanden. Zum Beispiel:
Man muss genau Hinhören, um zu entscheiden, ob die Farbe die richtige Konsistenz hat, das ist viel zuverlässiger, als (nur) darauf zu achten wie sie aussieht und sich anfühlt.
Die frische und noch ganz feuchte Farbe macht fast überhaupt kein Geräusch beim Verstreichen. Im ersten Video kam das Geräusch nur von dem Roller, den ich ziemlich heftig auf die Platte aufgesetzt habe. Ich zeige im nächsten Video nochmal langsam, dass man da kein Geräusch von der Farbe hört.

Here a few comments:

I am using a water based printing color that is especially designed for Lino printing.
The company claims that the color doesn't fade in light. Let's hope this is correct. The nice thing about this specific brand is that is stays moist relatively long, so that I can prepare the paint for a whole day right at the start. Still the color dries on the paper overnight.
This is its advantage over the oil based printing color I have. This would take probably about 3 days to dry. But since I am using softlino I am forced to use water based paint anyway. I suppose the material wouldn't withstand the cleansing solvent.
You have seen correctly: I am adding dishwashing soap to the plate. Since my blocks are made from plastic (not traditional artist's lino) they slightly repel water which therefore tends to form drops on the surfave. The soap let me cover my printing block more evenly. - Sounds strange but works perfectly fine!

What else have I learned? Many of the things look trivial once I have written them up. For example: You have to pay attention the the sound of your paint to determine whether it has the right consistency for printing. Let me demonstrate this.
When the print is freshly applied to the glass, rolling the brayer makes hardly any sound at all. The sound you could hear in the first video were just from the mechanical sounds of the brayer. Here you can hear it again - no sound!

After a while when the paint is less moist it makes first a smacking and then a hissing noise. Depending on the material of the block both can be correct. The soft lino needs a slight smacking sound, the rubber stamps need fairly dry paint and only a soft hiss. In the next video you can here the correct sound for the soft lino:

Wie gesagt, macht die Farbe erst gar kein Geräusch. Wenn sie etwas trockener wird und mehr am Roller klebt, entsteht zunächst ein schmatzendes, dann ein zischendes Geräusch. Für das weiche Linoleum braucht man noch etwas feuchtere Farbe und ein leichtes Schmatzen ist gerade richtig. Für das Stempelmaterial will man nur ein zartes Zischen. Hier könnt ihr den richtigen Sound für das Linoleum hören:

Der erste Fehldruck war wirklich der erste Druck überhaupt an dem Tag. Das Problem war noch zu feuchte Farbe. Das Papier das ich da benutze ist Bürodruckpapier und nimmt nicht gut die feuchte Farbe auf. Wenn ich also zu viel und zu feuchte Farbe auf dem Druckstock habe, verschmiert das wie gesehen. Aber ihr habt bestimmt schon gehört, dass die Farbe vorher auch zu wenig gezischt hat ;-)

Ich reibe das Papier gegen den Druckstock, um einen gleichmäßigen Druck hinzubekommen. Am Anfang habe ich die kleinen Formen noch wie Stempel benutzt, aber so mit dem Reiben ist es viel, viel einfacher!
Eine kleine Liste mit Dingen, dich ich mir merken will:

Hauptgründe für Fehldrucke

zu viel und/oder zu feuchte Farbe
zu wenig und/oder zu trockene Farbe
unkonzentriertes Abziehen des Druckstocks von der Form
unkonzentriertes Aufsetzen des Druckstocks auf die Form
dreckige Finger

Was ich das nächste Mal anders machen würde:

vorher genau festlegen, auf welche Seite welcher Druck kommen soll
mit allen Druckformen 'gleichzeitig' von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite eines Buches drucken (statt einen Stempel nach dem nächsten zu benutzen und jeweils x zufällige dafür Seiten auszuwählen)
dadurch hoffentlich Wege minimieren

So, dann werde ich jetzt wohl mal beginnen, Kleister zu kochen. Bis demnächst!

The first misprint you saw in the video was the first print of the day at all, and was due to still too moist paint.You probably heart that after I gave you this introduction to paint sounds ;-)
Generally I must have suffered from stage fright that day. Usually I produced about 8 misprints a day (that's less than 3% and probably o.k.) but yesterday it was 20. - Argh! I had about 20 minutes of video material mainly showing me throwing away attempted prints.

Let me ramble on about what I have learned. You saw in the video that I gently rub the paper onto the printing block to ensure an even print. In the beginning of this project I tried to use the small blocks more like one would use a stamp with a stamping pad. But this way is much, much easier to get a good print!
Here is a list of some more things I want to remember and make better the next time:

Main reasons for misprints:

too much and/or too moist paint
too few and/or too dry paint
not paying enough attention while pulling the paper from the printing block
not paying enough attention to placing the printing block on the paper
smudged fingers

Things I want to do differently:

determine beforehand and once an for all which page carries what face
printing one book from first page to last (instead of going through the stamps and printing x random pages with each of them)
thus reducing the distance I walked each day

Production of a Small Edition - Day 13: Printing the Last Batch

Today I am printing the last batch of pages. Seeing 16 stacks of pages in a press doesn't look like awfully much, and sometimes during the last days I caught myself at the thought of going on and printing some more, maybe making an edition of 20. But I won't. I am really glad that I am almost through with printing the smileys and I am looking forward to a change in my daily routine. Tomorrow I'll start with backing the cloth for the covers and slipcases.
Yesterday I made some short videos while printing. Once I have edited and cut them I'll pass on some of the small insights and tricks I found while printing more than 2560 times in a row.

Heute werden die letzen beiden Bücher gedruckt, dann bin ich endlich erstmal fertig. Morgen fange ich dann mit Kleister kochen an und werde den Stoff mit Papier hinterkleben, den ich am ersten Tag gekauft habe.
Wenn ich fertig bin, habe ich 2560 Linoldrucke gedruckt. Da sind die Fehldrucke und Vorversuche noch gar nicht eingerechnet. Es waren zwar keine großen Platten, aber ich denke, ich habe dabei nochmal einiges gelernt. Auch dass ich das alles am Stück und eine ganze Woche lang gemacht habe war gut, weil ich viele kleine Kleinigkeiten ein bisschen besser in den Griff bekommen habe.
Gestern habe ich nochmal ein paar kleine Videos beim Drucken gemacht. Die will ich nochmal besser aufarbeiten und und zusammenschneiden. Wenn das gemacht ist, poste ich nochmal ein paar Tips und Tricks zum Drucken.

Production of a Small Edition - Day 10: Still printing

Ich bin immernoch mitten drin, jeden Tag 2 Bücher drucken - das alleine braucht etwa 6 Stunden. Ich dachte zwischendurch, ich sei schneller geworden, aber ein Blick auf die Uhr zeigt dann, dass es diese Zeit einfach braucht. Dazu kommt noch das Zuschneiden, hinterher Wegräumen, und ein bisschen Computern und mein Tag ist voll. Zwischendurch musste ich einfach mal was anderes machen (natürlich trotzdem ein Buch, und zwar ein Rollbuch) und bin deshalb einen Tag im Rückstand: Noch 4 Büchlein müssen gemacht werden, also noch 2 Tage drucken.

I am still in the middle of the printing process. Printing 2 of the books still takes me a whole working day: 6 hours just the printing, add the cutting, cleaning and a little time for keeping my online life active and you have a packed day. The day before yesterday I took a day off to bind a book (I was already suffering from slight withdrawal symptoms ;-) here's a picture of the book), so now I am a day behind: four more books to print, 2 more days of printing.

Das da oben ist ein typisches Bild am Beginn eines Arbeitstages: Ich habe die Seiten schon zurechtgeschnitten und zum Drucken bereit gelegt. Was am meisten aufhält sind natürlich Fehldrucke...

What really slows me down while printing are the misprints: The first obviously fell into the paint, the third is oriented the wrong way, some are incomplete, others are simply smudged.Auf dem Bild sieht man, dass die erste Seite (nach einem eigentlich guten Druck) in die Farbe gefallen ist. Andere sind verschmiert, unvollständig oder die Seiten sind aufgrund dreckiger Finger irgendwie schmutzig geworden.
Wenn das passiert, nehme ich die Seite raus und ersetzte sie durch eine neue in der gleichen Farbe, die in der Lage an der gleichen Stelle sitzt. Das hier ist mein wachsender Vorrat an Extraseiten:
If I have a misprinted page I replace the page by another sheet of the same color from one that is at the same position in the signature. Above you see my growing storage of replacement pages.

Und jetzt mache ich mich an mein Wochenendbindeprojekt (mein erstes Hardcover mit Lederbezug, doch dazu ein andermal mehr).

This is another of the books I had the pleasure to see while I was visiting Bristol. This is a really simple one: A Pocket Poem by Catherine Cronin. Unfortunately I was unable to find out more about the artist.
Das hier ist ein weiteres Buch, das ich in Bristol gesehen habe. Ein eher simples Werk, aber ich mag es. Wer meinen Bristol Post gelesen hat, wird bemerkt haben, dass ich mich da gerade mit Wort- und Buchstabenspielereinen beschäftigt habe, da kam dieses Taschengedicht gerade recht. Es ist von Catherine Cronin, aber leider konnte ich nicht mehr über die Künstlerin herausbekommen.

Initially I wanted to show you some more books that I had the pleasure to see while I was visiting Bristol - it is scheduled for some time during this week. But after 6 hours of continued printing my Smiley Oracle and then several hours of fiddling with 'themes' I need some rest. There are so many choices of how you want to create you page on ning, you can change virtually anything, any color, any font - it made me crazy. I'll have to dump myself in a corner and read a book, far from a computer and similar devilish machines ;-)

Production of a Small Edition - Day 2: Printing

Mein gestriger erster 'Drucktag' für mein 'Smiley Orakel' Projekt hat mit fortgesetzten Vorbereitungen begonnen - erstmal alles Papier falten. Normalerweise würde man wohl erst alle Blätter bedrucken, sie dann erst falten und schneiden. Aber ich behalte so etwas besser den Überblick darüber, wo ich welche Motive schon hingestempelt habe. Und vor allem ist es einfacher, einfach eine Doppelseite auszutauschen bei einem Fehldruck, als das entweder im Kopf zu behalten oder eine ganze A4 Seite neu zu drucken.

Dann habe ich noch einige neue Stempel geschnitten ( jetzt sind 18 für die Bücher ausgewählt, hier auf Flickr anzuschauen) - und dann meine ersten zwei Bücher gedruckt. Die Farbe ist über Nacht getrocknet und heute morgen habe ich die ersten beiden Seitenstapel etwas beschwert zur Seite gelegt.

Yesterday began with folding the paper for all books. That took me about 2 hours. Although it is sometimes dull work, usually I like folding the paper. That's one of the things I like best about book binding, actually. Depending on the paper, I enjoy touching it and feeling its texture or, in this case, enjoying its look. It was fun, choosing the color combinations and watching all the signatures take shape. I folded up all the paper I will need fot he signatures. Not being cut up yet they are lying under weights and waiting for being printed.

After cutting three new stamps, I chose 18 of them for the edition (have a look on Flickr) and printed the pages of the first two books. The color dried over night and this morning I put the first two stacks of pages under some weights. There they'll wait until I start binding them.

Heute, am dritten Tag sind blau-blaue Seiten dran:Ich schaffe jeden Tag den Druck von 2 Büchern, also werde ich wohl noch die ganze nächste Woche damit beschäftigt sein. - Und was anderes zum Schreiben finden. - Ihr wollt doch nicht jeden Tag davon hören, wie ich jeden Tag das gleiche mache ;-)

Today I am printing blue pages. I can print 2 books a day, which means I will be printing though the next week. And will entertain you by writing about other stuff. I am surprised to observe my mood change while I am printing. When I am dealing with a happy face like this I feel my mood rise. Überrascht habe ich an mir selbst festgestellt, dass sich meine Laune verändert, je nachdem was ich gerade drucke. Bei dem Gesicht oben bekommen ich immer gute Laune. Andere sind deprimierend. Besonders bei diesem Gesicht hier, werde ich gereizt und geradezu aggressiv:

I cut the stamps into the backside of the material I got from Merle last year, by the way. It was thick enough to be able to do this without any problems. I used it before for a reduction print and it was therefore useless. Now I had this opportunity to reuse the material. And be grateful again for that generous gift.

Ich habe einige der Stempel übrigens in die Rückseite von dem dicken grauen Softlinoleum geschnitten, das ich letztes Jahr von Merle bekommen und für einen Reduktionsschnitt verwendet habe. Mit dem alten Druckstock konnte man also eh nichts mehr machen und so hat er eine schöne Weiterverwendung gefunden.

Yesterday I introduced my current project: 'The Smiley Oracle'. Instead of only presenting the finished product I decided to record the process in this online journal.

Above you see the current state of the project: Nothing has really changed since my last post. As I said before these are still experimental and all different (in format, binding style and content). My days in the last week were like this: I bound two books a day, made 2 covers and left them to dry, pre-punched the holes in two stacks of pages, and printed pages for two more books. That made a working day of about 11 hours. Add some online activity and eating, you'll have no difficulty understanding that this meant I left my studio at about 9p.m.

Not my dream working day, but now I finally know how I want to produce my series: I want brightly colored pages (this mint and pink you see above is not thrilling me), bright colored book cloth (the orange is not bright enough), and I want to work more in a process line. I will start printing all the pages, then bind them all, then make all the slipcases.
I used up all my material for these trial versions. So the first thing to do is go shopping for all the materials.

Ich habe ja gestern schon von meinem neuen Smiley-Projekt erzählt. Statt nur vom Ergebnis zu erzählen, habe ich beschlossen, hier auf dem Blog mal wirklich Tagebuch zu führen. Oben seht ihr den aktuellen Stand der Dinge - es hat sich seit gestern nicht viel getan. Die Büchlein sind noch alle verschieden (andere Stempel, etwas andere Formate usw.) Meine Arbeitstage in der letzten Woche sahen so aus: 2 Büchlein binden, Cover für 2 neue vorbereiten und Trocknen lassen, Seiten für 2 Bücher vorstechen, Seiten für 2 weitere stempeln. Das ganze hat etwa 11 Stunden gebraucht und ich habe (man muss ja auch noch surfen und Mittag essen und all sowas) bis abends um 21 Uhr hier gestanden. - Puh das war anstrengend!

Mittlerweile habe ich entschieden, was ich eigentlich will und habe jetzt vor, systematischer zu arbeiten, erst alles zu stempeln, dann alles zu binden, und dann die Schuber zu machen. Jetzt starte ich also in meine erste kleine Serie: Ich will 15 dieser Büchlein machen, Seitenformat 5cm x 4cm, 11 Lagen (statt 10), alles in jeweils zwei Farben. Das bedeutet ich brauche pro Buch je 6 DinA4 Blätter in 2 Farben, da sind dann Extraseiten für Fehldrucke mit eingerechnet. Bei 15 Büchern macht das also insgesamt 180 Din A4 Seiten. Außerdem brauche ich neuen Stoff zum Beziehen der Deckel und der Schuber. Es hieß also erst einmal einkaufen.

Als erstes bin ich also heute morgen zu meinem Papier- und Künstlerbedarfladen in der Innenstadt gegangen. Seit einiger Zeit habe ich begonnen Hüte zu tragen - finde ich totschick, und es ist erstaunlich, wie man mit Mantel, Stiefeln und Hut anders behandelt wird als mit Turnschuhen und Anorak. Darüber werde ich wohl nochmal gesondert nachdenken müssen - wer weiß, vielleicht wird nochmal ein Buch daraus ;-) The first thing I did this morning was therefore walking into the city and go buy the materials I need. Since recently I am wearing hats. I still feel a bit in costume with them, but I like my new look - and it is surprising how differently I am treated with a coat and hat in comparison to trainers and outdoor jackets. And for this 'most serious' shopping enterprise, I dressed up with my woolen coat, high boots, a woolen scarf and my hat...

Wie dem auch sei... Ich hatte eigentlich vor, die paar Seiten, die ich brauche als lose Papiere einzukaufen, aber da hatten sie leider entweder nur cremefarbenes (Brief-)Papier, Karton (ab 150g) oder Bögen zu horrenden Preisen, die dann den Einkauf von jeweils 500 Seiten Packs letztendlich nicht nur pro Seite sondern absolut billiger gemacht hat. Kaum hatte ich allerdings das Papier in Tüten verstaut, habe ich mein schickes (und viel zu warmes) Outfit bitter bereut. Was kann man in Wollmantel, mit Schal und Stiefeln heute schwitzen! Und meine Allwetter-Outdoor-Jacke ist dann doch atmungsaktiver als die Wolle. Trotz der schweren Last habe ich es noch zu Karstadt geschafft und die Stoffe im Bild gekauft und bin dann nach Hause geschnauft. - Puh, endlich hier angekommen!
For an edition of 15 books with pages the size of 5cm x 4 cm I need 180 pages of colored paper in total, for each book 6 pages of each color and this includes spares for misprints. Initially I wanted to buy the papers individually, but all they had there was either cream colored or cardstock or ridiculously priced. I ended up buying 5 stacks of 500 pages each which came out cheaper not only per page but also the overall amount of money spent is reduced. - And I regretted my outfit the very moment I was handed the bags with the paper. Carrying 2500 pages instead of 180 makes a difference - and a woolen coat is much less breathable at the same time warmer than my Jack Wolfskin jacket! And the hat was killing me!
I managed to stop by another shop and buy the cotton cloth you can see in the picture, too. And then I was crawling and sweating back to my studio - puh!

So my plans for today are:

Finish the books in the pre-edition. (I think I want to keep them.)
Cut a few more faces into stamping material.
Prepare to start printing tomorrow.

Ich werde die Bücher aus der Prä-Edition noch fertig machen. - Ich denke, ich will sie behalten.
Noch ein paar neue Stempel schneiden.
Schonmal die Papiere zusammenstellen und schneiden, damit ich morgen gleich mit dem Stempeln und Drucken anfangen kann.

The Smiley Oracle

Juchu! Mein Fotoaparat funktioniert wieder. In der Zwischenzeit habe ich einiges gemacht, die Fotos werden sich demnächst auf Flickr finden lassen.
Meine Hauptarbeit zur Zeit ist aber die erste kleine Edition, die ich produziere. Das Buch heißt: Das Smiley Orakel. Ich habe in letzter Zeit ein bisschen darüber nachgedacht, was für eine Art Information Bücher eigentlich enthalten können. Das Ergebnis ist nun dieses Orakelbüchlein. Man stelle ihm eine Frage, blättert eine zufällige Seite auf und bekommt als Antwort einen Smiley. Den muss man dann (richtig) interpretieren - so wie es von richtige (und wahren ;-) ) Orakeln verlangt ist.
Auf dem Bild seht ihr verschiedene Büchlein in unterschiedlichen Stadien: Ganz links hinten, in gelbem Schuber und mit hellblauen und dunkelblauen Seiten ist das allererste Büchlein, das eigentlich noch gar nicht zur Edition gehört, das ich aber dazugestellt habe, weil bei dem der Schuber als einziger schon bedruckt ist, und für die fertigen Büchlein soll das auch so sein. Ihr könnt noch zwei weitere fertige Büchlein mit noch unbedrucktem Schuber sehen, und zwei Versionen, die schon gedruckt sind, aber noch nicht gebunden.
Alle Seiten sind handbedruckt, 160 Drucke in jedem Büchlein insgesamt. Die Seiten sind ziemlich klein: 5cm x 5cm groß.
So einen Schuber mit einer fehlenden Ecke habe ich mir übrigens bei Papieren Avonturen abgeguckt.
So, und wenn alles gut geht, wird es etwa 3-4 Wochen dauern, bis ich soweit bin - ich erzähle werde dann nochmal von dem fertigen Produkt berichten. Unten habe ich nochmal ein Bild mit einigen der verwendeten Stempel-Smileys eingebunden.

Yay, my camera is working again! To celebrate that fact, I grant you a glimpse at my current project (I am only pretending to be generous, I was only waiting to show it off!). It is called 'the smiley oracle' and is exactly what the name suggests. You ask the book a question, open a random page and get a smiley as an oracle that has to be interpreted. I am still wondering, whether I should include a small instruction booklet or whether it is self explanatory. I am planning to print a small edition and if I keep working at a steady pace I will be finished in 3 weeks. - I'll let you know when I have them all! On the very left in the picture above you can see the very prototype which still has more and slightly smaller pages than the books I am making now. I included it because its slipcase is already printed - which I am also planning for the books in the edition. The orange-yellow books are the first books finished. Just their slipcases and covers still need printing upon. In the front you can see some of the pages that still need to be bound.
Each book consists of 10 signatures of 8 sheets each. That makes 160 handprinted pages in each book (only the right hand side is printed, the left side is left blank). Each has pages in two different colors, but the colors vary. The slipcases have a left out corner so that it is easier to grap the book contained. I first saw such a slipcase at Papieren Avonturen.
Finally here are some of the faces I am using in the books. And now I am off to bake a birthday cake for my dear husband whose birthday is tomorrow - see you soon!

Random Passions - Karen Hanmer

My camera still is broken. So here I present another treasure I found in the beautiful boxes of Sahrah Bodman in Bristol. The book is called Random passions and is covered in rich red velvet. Inside you can see the traced out shaped of couples on romance novels on translucent paper. This way they seem to melt into one another and melt into one big theme. Thus they illustrate how exchangable the characters in these books are. The artist is called Karen Hanmer. On her homepage you can also see more of her books in a gallery view. The other book that can be seen in the pictures is 'Exit' by Alison Hardcastle.Da mein Fotoaparat immernoch nicht funktioniert, habt ihr die Gelegenheit noch mehr der Schätze zu sehen, die ich in Bristol zu Gesicht bekommen habe. Dieses Buch hat den Titel 'Random Passions' und die Künstlerin heißt Karen Hanmer. Es ist in roten Samt gebunden (mhmmm) und enthält die Konturen von Paaren auf Liebesromanen auf Transparentpapier. Die verschiedenen Paare scheinen so ineinander überzugehen, die einzelnen Motive durchdringen und überlagern sich und verdeutlichen so wie auswechselbar die Helden dieser Romane letztendlich sind. - Ein Blick auf ihre Homepage lohnt sich übrigens - in einer Gallerieansicht kann man noch mehr ihrer Bücher sehen.
Das andere Buch, das auf den Bildern zu sehen ist, ist 'Exit' von Alison Hardcastle.

Mein Fotoaparat ist vorgestern während ich gerade eine der Boxen für mein Grassteineprojekt fotographiert habe, heruntergefallen und macht zur Zeit keine Fotos. Das ist nun die Gelegenheit, einige der Bücher vorzustellen, die ich während meines Besuchs in Bristol gesehen habe. Das hier ist 'Exit' von Alison Hardcastle aus dem Jahr 2005. Auf jeder Seite ist ein Adverb (wie man so hinausgehen kann) vorgestellt. Hier das Wort reluctantly = widerstrebend. Die Homepage der Autorin scheint leider noch im Aufbau. Wenn ihr mehr sehen wollt, werft doch mal einen Blick auf diesen Shop der Soma Gallery. Da ist zwar 'exit' nicht dabei, aber ihr könnt weitere Beispiele ihrer Drucke sehen.

The day before yesterday my camera broke while I was taking pictures of one of the boxes for my grass stone books that I finally finished. So I can't show you pictures of my own work. And this is the perfect time to introduce some of the many books I had the cance to view when I visited Bristol. This is the book 'Exit' by Alison Hardcastle from the year 2005. On each of the pages you see one adverb on how to exit. Unfortunately the author's homepage is still under construction. Have a look at more of her work here - 'exit' is not among the projects they present there, but you can see other examples of her typography and some of the books and cards.

Zopf am Rücken

Ich liebe ja Buchbinderpuzzle! Piami hat vor einigen Tagen ein Buch im Book Arts Forum (Bilder sieht man nur mit Login) vorgestellt, das ich ausgesprochen interessant fand: In schwarzes Leder gebunden und mit einem interessanten Zopf auf dem Rücken. In ihrer Beschreibung dazu erwähnte sie, dass es einfacher zu machen sei als es aussieht, und dass man dafür 6 Nadeln braucht. - Na da habe ich mich doch mal ans Rätseln gemacht! Das Ergebnis des ersten Versuchs ist dieses Mini-Büchlein mit hellblau und knallblauen Seiten, blauen Leinenfaden und blauem Lederband als Verschluss. Es ist etwa 8cm x 6cm groß geworden. Das kleine Format hat das Binden nicht wirklich einfacher gemacht, und zwischendurch habe ich mich für meinen Geiz, der dazu geführt hat, dass ich zum Ausprobieren nur Reste verwendet habe, verflucht. Aber ich denke, ich habe das Rätsel gelöst.

I love book binding puzzles. Piami recently posted a book in the show-and-tell section of the book arts forum (images are only visible if you have a login) that intrigued me. It was bound on black leather and had a braid on the spine like I had not seen it before. She mentioned in her description that she needed 6 needles to do it and that is was easier than it looked like.
So I tried to figure out how it is done. This booklet with blue pages, blue sewing thread and blue closure strap was my very first try. - And I think I solved the puzzle. This is a mini version (which didn't make it easier), only about 8cm x 6cm big.
After this first successful binding I made another honest attempt. It yielded a books that I only reluctantly set up for sale. - It feels so good to hold in the hand that I just wanted to keep and use it.
It is one of my character flaws that makes it hard for me to earn real money with books: Either I want to keep them because I like them too much, or I don't want to sell them because I don't like them.
Dieses weinrot und schwarze Buch war dann mein erster wirklicher Versuch. Ich war selbst erstaunt, wie gut das Ergebnis ist. Die beiden Leder sind weich und krumpelig, so dass es den Eindruck macht, als wäre das getragenes und recycletes Leder obwohl es noch ganz neu ist. Das braune Kraftpapier (besseres Packpapier) passt ganz wunderbar dazu. Das Format ist etwa wie zwei A7 Bücher aufeinandergestellt. Durch die Naht in der Mitte sieht es dann wirklich auch so aus - ich finde das ganz lustig. Dadurch dass das Buch so lang und schmal ist, läd es natürlich ein, es mit Listen zu füllen. Vielleicht wäre es als Spielstandaufschreibblock gut geeignet. Aber trotz des schmalen Aussehens ist es auch als Tagebuch geeignet: Das aufgeschlagene Buch ist gerade A5 groß und breit, wenn man also über die ganze Seite schreibt, hat man ein ordentliches Format für Text.
Das Buch sieht ziemlich dünn aus (der Rücken ist gerade mal anderthalb Zentimeter dick), aber es beinhaltet fast 200 Seiten.
Ach, ich mag es kaum weggeben. Ich habe mich jetzt aber doch entschieden es in meinen Etsy-Shop aufzunehmen. Aber ich glaube, ich will demnächst noch mehr solche Bücher machen.

Und nun viel Spaß beim selbst Rätseln! - Die Bindung ist übrigens wirklich nicht sehr schwierig. Wenn Interesse besteht, kann ich demnächst mal erklären, wie man das macht.

This is another self portrait and those of you who have seen its predecessors must admit that I am getting better. - It still isn't quite right, though.

Das oben ist mal wieder ein Versuch, mich selbst zu portraitieren. Ich dachte, das passt als Bild dazu, dass ich heute ein bisschen was über mich preisgeben soll. Letzte Woche bin ich von Billie getagged worden. Sie will 7 Bücherfakten von mir wissen, und ich soll den Tag weitergeben.

So here are my seven book facts:

I like to read socially. When I was in primary school I had a friend with whom I got together after school to read together. We were simply sitting side by side, each reading her book. ~~When no friend is around to do that~~ Nowadays, I like to read in Cafes.
I like Audio Books. I feel like I shouldn't. Of course I do enjoy the book as an object as much as the literature contained therein. I like the musty smell of old books and the glossy appearance of new ones. But I also like being told stories and I like audio books.
My favorite authors are Neil Gaiman and Umberto Ecco.
In each of our rooms in our flat are bookshelves except the bathroom, there the books just clutter around the bath tube and the toilet. We have about 70 meters of shelves, more than 50 of them occupied by books. (Maybe even 60, it's hard to tell, because many boards are partially full.)
I like buying books. I buy more books than I can read. I used to read more and haven't cut down my buying rate, I guess.
I like to read all kinds of novels, fantasy and SciFi. And I love contemporary poetry. And I really like reading encyclopaedias (wow, as I am writing this I realize how nerdy this must sound). I also like books for children. I don't like to read history books (including the silmarillion), biographies, collections of letters and similar biographical-historical stuff. I like books that contain witty ideas and still are written with a feel for the characters and athmosphere. (That's why I don't like to read Lem all that much. He has really great ideas but doesn't care to give flesh to his characters.)
I hate it when the spine of a book breaks. It almost causes me physical pain to see people dog ear their books, force them too far open or lay them opened on the floor. I can read even thick paperbacks without leaving a trail of doing so. When I lend books to friends I usually add: "Treat them nicely!" I can bear the book looking used in my shelf, though, and take them back even severely bruised. It is just the thought or sight of hurting them that I cannot stand.

So, now I should tag 7 more people, but it will be only 4. In no particular order:

Ich lese gerne in Gesellschaft. Schon als Kind habe ich mich gerne mit meiner Freundin zum Lesen getroffen. Wir haben dann nach der Schule beieinander gesessen und Lektüren ausgetausche und auch einfach jede für sich gelesen. Heute gehe ich gerne in Cafes, um dort zu lesen.
Ich mag Hörbücher.
Meine Lieblingsautoren sind Neil Gaiman und Umberto Ecco.
In jedem Raum unserer Wohnung befinden sich Bücherregale. Außer im Badezimmer, da sammeln sich die Bücher in unordentlichen Haufen neben der Toilette (eher die Bücher meines Mannes) und der Badewanne (eher meine Bücher). Insgesamt haben wir mehr als 70 Regalmeter und mehr als 50 davon sind durch Bücher besetzt.
Ich kaufe gerne Bücher. Ich kaufe mehr Bücher als ich lese.
Ich lese gerne alle Arten von Romanen, Fantasy und Science Fiction. Außerdem mag ich zeitgenössische Poesie. Und ich lese gerne in Lexika. Was ich nicht so gerne lese sind Geschichtsbücher (inklusive des Sillmarillion), Biographien, Briefsammlungen und ähnliches biographisch-historisches Zeug. Ich möchte, dass meine Bücher gute Ideen enthalten, aber ich möchte auch, dass sie mit einem Interesse an ihren Charakteren und Atmosphäre geschrieben sind. Deswegen mag ich Stanislaw Lem, den mein Mann verschlingt, nicht so gerne. Er hat wirklich lustige Idee, aber scheint wenig Interesse an einer echten Ausarbeitung zu haben.
Ich kann selbst dicke Taschenbücher lesen ohne dass der Rücken bricht. Zu sehen wie jemand ein Buch kräftig zu weit öffnet, Eselsohren hineindrückt oder es offen auf den Boden legt, bereitet mir Qualen. - Mein Mann hat von meinem ständigen leisen Stöhnen gelernt und kann mittlerweile unsere Bücher ebenfalls so lesen, dass sie selbst nach wiederholter Lektüre wie neu aussehen ;-)

Und jetzt bin ich gespannt, was die anderen so schreiben.

Indirect Tacketing - Tutorial und Verlosung / Give-Away and Tutorial

Am Anfang der Woche hat mich das Buch "Limp Bindings from Tallin" by Monica Langwe Berg erreicht. (Der Titel steht so auf dem Buch, nur ein 'n' - Merkwürdig, aber ich will's ja nicht falsch zitieren.) Ich hatte noch nicht richtig Zeit, alles im Detail zu lesen, aber schon von der Einleitung hatte ich etwas. Dort habe ich gelernt, was 'indirect tacketing' ist und habe das gleich ausführlich ausprobiert. Erst an dem schwarzen Buch, dann mit einigen Resten und Schnipseln. Drei Versuche seht ihr ja oben. Das schwarze behalte ich für mich, das rot-schwarze Ledernotizbuch wird's offline zu kaufen geben und das grüne Mini-Notizbuch habe ich vor, zu verschenken. Ich hab' dieses Mini zu sehr ins Herz geschlossen, um es für ein bisschen Geld zu verkaufen und für viel Geld kann ich es nicht verkaufen, weil es ja doch noch ein Übungsstück ist, was man bei genauem Hinsehen auch sieht. - Naja, es kommt wohl darauf an, wie genau man hinsieht; mein Mann sagt, er sieht nichts, aber was weiß der schon ;-). Wie dem auch sei, ich habe also beschlossen, es zu verschenken.
Alle Namen derer, die diesen Beitrag kommentieren kommen auf Zettel in einen Sack, und dann wird gelost. Ich verschicke gerne in alle Welt. On Monday I received my latest book on books, Monica Langwe Berg's "Limp Bindings from Tallin" (yes, only one 'n' on my book - I stumble upon this every time I write this, but this is how it is spelled on the title).
I haven't had enough time yet, to really dig into the material presented in the book. But already reading the introduction was enlightening, and I picked up the technique of indirect tacketing.
I practiced that on several books by now. I already showed you the black book which was my first try. The black and red leather note book in the photo above will be for sale off line and the green felt booklet, a miniature address book I want to give to one of you.
I like it too much to sell it for few money, and since it is still a practice piece and has some imperfections that can be seen by close inspection I don't want to sell it for big money. Obviously, whether you see imperfections depends on how close you inspect the book: My husband says he can't see anything, but I can. But I think it's a cute little piece that will hopefully find some friends among you. Just comment on this blog and your name will be in the tombola. I will happily sent it to anywhere in the world. And announce the winners here on the blog.

It is really small as you can see in the photo below, so it fits in every bag. It has about 8 pages per letter and a little extra space for notes at the end.
So klein ist das Büchlein! Es hat ungefähr 8 Seiten pro Buchstabe und hinten noch etwas extra Platz für Notizen. Die Taps für Buchstaben habe ich mit Hand auf Transparentpapier geschrieben und mit Tesafilm festgeklebt. Deswegen sind die nicht perfekt in einer Höhe und manche sind nicht so super zu sehen, weil die Seiten vorne nicht beschnitten sind. Aber insgesamt ist das vielleicht eher niedlich als unschön. - Also, wer möchte der neue Besitzer dieses Büchleins sein? (Mehr Bilder auf Flickr.)

Und nun will ich mal erklären, wie 'indirekt tacketing' funktioniert. So wie ich das hier erkläre steht das nicht in dem Buch von Langwe. Deren Bücher sind etwas komplizierter mit zusätzlichen Verstärkungen und so. Dies hier funktioniert auch nur für relativ kleine und leichte Bücher.

Anders als bei anderen lappigen Lederbindungen (frei übersetzt von 'limp leather bindings' - ich kenne den deutschen Fachausdruck nicht), sind die Buchseiten nicht direkt an das Einbandmaterial drangebunden, sondern der Buchblock und der Einband werden einzeln vorbereitet und dann erst durch sogenannte Tackets (wird später noch erklärt) verbunden.
Als erstes binden wir einen Buchblock zusammen. Etwa so wie in dieser groben Skizze zu sehen.
Wir wollen außer den Fitzbünden - in der Skizze mit K gekenntzeichnet - K wie Fitzbund, klar, oder? ;-) - an mindestens zwei weiteren Stellen die Lagen verbinden. Ich habe das mit Kettenstich wie für koptische Bindungen gemacht. Wichtig ist aber nur, dass wir zwischen den Lagen eine feste Verbindung haben, weil später ein Faden parallel zu den Lagen an dem Heftfaden festgemacht wird. Wer nochmal eine Anleitung für diese Art Bindung braucht, sei auf dieses Youtube Video verwiesen.And now I am going to explain to you how 'indirect tacketing' works for such small books. This is not an instruction from the Langwe-Book but my own simplified version. This is only suitable for relatively small and light books.

For the indirect tacketing we make the book block and the cover as two different pieces and when both are ready we combine them by the indirect tacketing.

The first step is to make the book block. You can do this in different styles. The important thing is that you need at least two sewing stations different from the kettle stiches where the signatures are connected. I sew my book blocks simply in a soft cover coptic style with kettle stiches (K in the sketch above) and two chain stiches (C). But you could also do a lock stich instead of a chain stich or similar. If you want a reminder in how to sew a book block via chain stiches have a look at this you tube tutorial.

Als nächstes bereitet man den Einband vor. Dafür muss man erstmal die Maße des Buchblocks kennen. Es hängt vom persönlichen Geschmack ab, wie groß genau der Einband sein soll. Man schneidet einen Streifen, der etwas höher ist als den Buchblock ist und eine Länge hat, die etwas kleiner ist als 3x die Breite der Seiten plus 2x die Breite des Buchblocks. Denn es soll ja die Vorderseite so lang sein wie das Buch breit ist, dann über den Rücken laufen, dann über die Rückseite ( jetzt haben wir zweimal die Breite des Buchs) dann über den Vorderschnitt (jetzt haben wir etwa 2x die Rückenbreite) und dann soll noch etwas wieder auf den Vorderdeckel übergreifen. Das kann man auch einfach abmessen, indem man den Buchblock in das Deckenmaterial einwickelt und direkt einige Markierungen auf dem Material macht. Wenn man nichts Besonderes vorhat, kommt es nicht so genau auf die Länge an.

In den Einband werden nun einige Seiten Papier als Futter angebacht. Es ist auf der einen Seite Verzierung und schützt den Buchblock auf der anderen Seite vor Dreck und Farbe aus dem Deckenmaterial. Normalerweise sollte es etwas schmaler als das Deckenmaterial und etwas höher oder genauso hoch wie der Buchblock sein und eine Länge von etwa 2x der Breite des Buchblocks plus 1x der Breite des Rückens haben. Also so, dass man den Buchblock einmal darin einwickeln kann. Aber hier hat man viele Freiheiten.

In dem Fall von dem schwarzen Buch war das Futter einfach nur eine Seite Eulen-Vorsatzpapier. Das hat nicht gut funktioniert weil es zu dünn war. Ich empfehle ausdrücklich mehrere oder dickere Seiten. Im Fall von dem schwarzen Notizbuch habe ich mir die Freiheit genommen, das Futter etwas breiter als den Einband zu machen - ich finde, das sieht ganz lustig aus. Das Filzbüchlein hat gar kein Futter bekommen - das funktioniert auch.Next we cut all the pieces for the cover. To do this, first measure your book block. You need to know its width and height and how wide the spine is. For the cover we first cut a strip from the outward covering material. It should be slightly taller than the book block and the length should be approximately twice the width of the block spine plus two and a half times the width of the book block. That is because it should start flush with the book on the front (1x width), wrap around the back (1x spine) along the back of the book (2x width) back up at the front (2x spine) and wrap over the front again and close there (2 1/2 width). You can either plan, compute and measure, or simply wrap your book block in the covering material and mark directly onto the material. If you are in doubt about the length rather leave it a little longer. You can still cut it after the binding.

Next we add several sheets of paper for the lining. For the black book I simply took one sheet of this owl end paper. This was not a good idea becaue it tears too easily. Take thick paper and /or several sheets. They serve decorative as well as protective purposes. You would generally want it to be slightly taller or equal in height to the book block, slightly smaller than your cover, and so long that you can cover the front, back, and spine of your book. For the small leather notebook I chose the red leather paper for the lining slightly taller than the leather because I liked how it gives a little color to the book when it is closed (this only works because the paper itself is quite thick). In case of the felt booklet I didn't use any lining at all. - Experiment with what looks and feels good.

Als nächstes befestigen wir das Futter am Einband und stechen schon die Löcher für unsere Tackets vor. Das geht am Besten in einem einzigen Schritt.
Zunächst brauchen wir ein Stück Millimeter- (oder anderes)papier, etwa so hoch ist wie das Einbandmaterial und deutlich breiter als der Rücken. Dann legen wir alles wie in der Skizze übereinander: Einbandpapier, Futter und darauf der Buchblock. So dass sie auf der linken Seite so zu liegen kommen, wie sie auf dem geschlossenen Buch liegen sollen (dadurch, dass es später gerollt sein wird, liegt es rechter Hand jetzt ein bisschen aufgefächert).
Auf dem Millimeterpapier markieren wir jetzt die Position des Buchs und der Stiche, vor allem der Kettenstiche, an denen ja später der Einband befestigt werden soll. Klickt auf das Bild, um es ein bisschen besser zu sehen!
In the next step we plan how the spine of the finished book will look like, we will prepunch all the holes and connect the cover with the lining.
Cut a piece of graph paper of approximately the height of the cover. Line up the cover, the lining, and the book blog on one side (preferably of the front cover) on the table. (Because this will bend round, it means that it will not be flush on the other side). Aligne the graph paper with the book block and mark the height of the book block, the position of the kettle stich, and the chain stiches. (The chain stiches are actually more important.)

We continue working on the graph paper. We want to attach the book block to the cover with tackets that reach through the cover and the lining and will be visible on the book spine. First measure the distance from one space between the sections to the next. This will be the distance between the tackets if you want to place one between each section. If this distance is too small to allow easy sewing, you don't need to put a tacket through each inter-section. For a thin book even two tackets would suffice - in the first and last space. Plan how many you want to use and how far they should be apart. The holes for the tackets are punched at the height of the chain stiches. Mark them in the correct distances on your graph paper.

Then choose with what kind of stitch you want to attach the lining to the cover. The easiest would be a cross stich as wide and high as the distance between the first and last tacket. You can see the crosses in the photo on top. You can replace them by a more complicated stitching of course if you want to. Mark also the holes you need for you chosen design on the graph paper. It should then look similar to the following sketch.

Jetzt arbeiten wir weiter auf dem Millimeterpapier und wollen die Stellen markieren, an denen wir durch den Rücken stechen. Dafür müssen wir als erstes planen, wie der Rücken überhaupt aussehen soll. Es ist nicht schwierig, an dem Buchblock zu messen, wie wie die Zwischenräume der Lagen auseinander stehen. Das hängt davon ab, wie dick eure Lagen sind und was für einen Faden ihr hier verwendet habt. Wir müssen nicht durch alle Zwischenräume stechen. Im Fall des schwarzen Buchs, habe ich das gemacht. Dadurch habe sich 4 Tackets im Abstand von etwa 3mm ergeben. Je nachdem was man für ein Deckenmaterial hat, ist es nicht so einfach, Löcher in so kurzem Abstand zu stechen, ohne dass diese inreissen. Man könnte etwa jeden zweiten Zwischenraum wählen, oder nur den ersten und letzten. Die äußeren beiden sollte man aber auf jeden Fall einbeziehen.
Man markiert die Einstiche für die Tackets, und die Stiche mit denen man das Futter mit dem Einband verbindet. Dafür gibt es verschiedene Möglichkeiten, am einfachsten wäre ein Kreuz, das so breit und hoch ist wie die äußersten Tackets auseinanderliegen.
Der Streifen Millimeterpapier sieht anschließend etwa so aus:Jetzt werden alle Schichten wieder richtig aufeinandergelegt, der Buchblock evtl. zur Kontrolle nochmal draufleget, damit auch wirklich alles hinterher passt. Wenn alles stimmt, nimmt man den Buchblock weg und der Rest wird, so wie er daliegt, mit einer Ahle durchgestochen (Pricknadeln funktionieren übrigens auch). Also durch das Millimeterpapier, durch alles Futterpapier und durch das Einbandmaterial.

Anschließend werden Deckelmaterial und Futter zusammengenäht.

Now line up again the cover material and the lining, and place your graph paper on the right spot (be careful with this, in the next step you can ruin your whole work, so maybe check a third time with the book block inserted that everything is correctly lined up). When all is in place, punch all the holes through all layers (cover, lining, graph paper).

Now sew the lining to the cover.

Alles was jetzt noch fehlt sind die Tackets. Jeder wird einzeln gemacht. Sie sind nicht miteinander verbunden. Ich fand' es am einfachsten, als erstes diejenigen zu machen, die in der Buchmitte liegen und mich nach außen vorzuarbeiten. Wenn man das machen will, sollte man die ersten Blätter im Buchblock mit dem Cover zusammenklippen.
Ein Tacket ist eine Art Klammerstich. Hier ein erstes schematisches Bild, von außen:
Dafür gehen wir vom Inneren des Buchblocks, zwischen den Lagen, durch das vorgestochene Loch nach außen, durch das andere Loch auf gleicher Höhe wieder nach Innen, dann wieder nach außen durch das gleiche Loch, durch das wir schon einmal durch gegangen sind, wickeln den Faden mehrmals um das gespannt Stück Faden vor uns liegt und gehen zurück durch das zweite Loch. Jetzt haben wir im Inneren des Buchblocks, zwischen den Lagen, zwei Fadenenden, die wir verknoten. - Fertig ist der erste Tacket. Von innen sollte das kurz vor Verknoten etwa so aussehen:

Einen nach dem nächsten machen wird fertig. Das war's! Nun muss nur noch ein Verschluss ans Buch angebracht werden und das überlasse ich euch. Ich habe Druckknöpfe benutzt.

Puh, das Aufschreiben und Skizzieren hat länger gedauert als so ein Buch zu machen. Ich hoffe, es hat euch gefallen. Wenn ihr Fragen habt, beantworte ich sie gerne. - Und nun vergesst nicht, durch einen Kommentar an der Verlosung teilzunehmen!

Now in the final step we sew the book block and the cover with tackets. A tacket is the name of a stich where the thread is wrapped around itself. Here a first schematic picture: I found it easiest to start with the innermost tackets and work towards the covers. But this is probably a matter of taste. You'll ease your work if you clip the cover to the book so that everything stays neatly in place. You start by sewing from the interior of the book, from between two sections, to the outside through one of the pre-punched holes, over the spine into the book block between the same two sections, back out through the first hole, wrap the thread around itself and back into the book trough the second hole. This should look approximately like this: Now tie the ends of the thread. And repeat with the next tacket. Continue until you have them all done. Finished!
Now you have to take care of a closure but I'll let you do this on your own. I simply used snap fasteners for these books.

Das Buch passt zu meiner momentanen Stimmung.

Das Buch "Limp Bindings from Tallin" von Monica Langwe Berg hat mich in der Zwischenzeit erreicht und dieses Buch trägt entsprechende Spuren. Der Buchblock und der Einband sind als separate Stücke gebunden. Der Block ist dann an dem Leder durch "indirect tacketing" verbunden.

The book "Limp Bindings from Tallin" by Monica Langwe Berg reached me in the meantime and the structure of this piece is a hybrid of several of those presented in the book. The book block was bound seperately from the cover and then attached by what Langwe calls "indirect tacketing".

This week my beloved grandmother died nearly ninety years old. I feel very close to her, and had a grievous week.
As much as I grieve for my grandmother, I am also glad for her that she finally died in peace. Since my grandfather died 2 years ago she refused to eat and drink periodically but seemed to forget that she was on a 'hunger strike' again and again. She faded away in that time, which gave me the feeling that I already lost her before her actual death. Unable to move in the slightest (even blinking exhausted her) in the last months, she was not giving us any reaction anymore, and it is not clear how much of her surroundings she still perceived. The doctors predicted her death for the weekend while my husband and I were still in Bristol, but when we came back from England she was still alive. I visited her the next day, and I am grateful that I could see her one last time, and say Goodbye properly.

When she was still alive and well she was a very interested, if not to say nosy person. During the war she proved a brave woman that knew when to seize the moment. She loved animals, had always had a dog, and before I was born also cats and other pets, for example a turtle. She was always busy. When I think of her, I mainly picture her working in the kitchen: She used to make a lot of jam, canned fruit and related stuff. They had a big garden with all sorts of trees, fruits and vegetables and all the harvest had to be taken care of.
She loved to eat and cook sweet stuff. One of her specialities was "Atomstaubstoffsuppe" and "Atomstaubstoffspeise" - this is what my grandfather called her chocolatepudding with beaten egg whites and vanilla soup with the beaten egg whites swimming in it like ice bergs. It roughly translates to 'atom materia soup' and 'atom materia food'.
I spent much time with my grandparents, as a kid and later on, and I had a close relationship to them. I feel strange and lost, knowing that I won't hear their voices again.

After the funeral yesterday, we visited her house again, looking through stuff, my sisters, my cousins and me choosing items that we would like as reminders. To me they were still her belongings and it felt horrible, like looting. My aunt and my mother will have to choose which things to give away and which to keep, so it was probably right to choose some things that might look worthless to them, but are valuable for me. - And so I inherited some beautiful things that I want to share here with you.

Meine Oma ist letzte Woche im Alter von fast 90 Jahren gestorben. Ich fühlte und fühle mich ihr sehr verbunden. So sehr mich ihr Tod schmerzt, so denke ich doch, dass er für sie eine Erlösung von einem zu letzt zur Last gewordenen Leben kam. Seit dem Tod meines Großvaters vor zwei Jahren, schien sie wenig Freude mehr am Leben zu haben. Sie ist immer schwächer geworden und Anfang dieser Woche entgültig eingeschlafen. Ich mag nicht nochmal alles das, was ich oben auf Englisch schon über sie geschrieben habe, nochmal aufschreiben. Irgendwie fällt es mir leichter, darüber in einer Fremdsprache zu schreiben. Die Bilder zeigen verschiedene Erinnerungsstücke, die ich von ihnen jetzt zu Hause habe: This is a box that belonged to my grandfather. He was a craftsman painter and an artist in his free time.The colors must be ages old and probably won't be good anymore. I was mainly interested in the box. The tubes still feel smooth, though. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Die Box oben stammt noch von meinem Opa. Er war gelernter Malermeister und war in seiner Freizeit auch künstlerisch tätig. Seine erste (Solo-) Ausstellung hatte er allerdings erst nach seinem Tod. Als Maler hatte er gelernt, Gemälde zu Rahmen, konnte also Glas einsetzen und das war nach dem Krieg sein erster Job. Er bekam das Glas, das er dafür brauchte zugeteilt, plus 10 % Verschnitt. "Und ich habe mich eben nicht verschnitten." Dadurch dass er also Glas übrig hatte, hat er sein erstes Geld verdient. Mir geht das oft durch den Kopf, während ich arbeite. Das Holzköfferchen enhält noch einige Ölfarben - wahrscheinlich sind die restlos verdorben, immerhin sind sie mindestens 3 Jahre alt, wahrscheinlich eher 10, und haben keine Kappe. Allerdings fühlen sich die Tuben noch weich an. Die Kanne unten erinnert mich an Abendbrotessen bei meinen Großeltern. Sieht sie nicht wunderbar nach 50er Jahren aus?
This is a coffee pot that reminds me strongly of my grandparents. As long as I can recall we used to drink mint or chamomile tea from it for dinner. - I don't think this is the lid that it had - I only realized that when I was at home. It is very typical of them both to find something else that could serve as a substitute for a broken lid. And I think the golden top of it goes very well with this fifties design.
This is my grandmother's bible. It is slightly broken: The marker ribbon is torn off, the headbands are gone and the gilding rubbed off at some parts.At the front cover, I can feel a sigil of sorts through the covering leather - I don't really understand what this is. Despite these signs of wear it is still a beautiful book. And it contains some notes in her handwriting on the first page about the verses with which she had her conformation and her wedding and which I also chose, for that reason among others, for my confirmation and my wedding.

Die Bibel habe ich ebenfalls geerbt. Abgesehen davon, dass es eine schöne Stuttgarter Bibel der Würtenberigschen Bibelanstalt ist, enthält sie vorne handschriftliche Notizen meiner Oma zu ihrem Konfirmations- und Trauspruch. Den gleichen Vers habe ich ebenfalls als meinen Konfirmations- und auch Trauspruch gewählt. Das Buch selbst ist in mittelmäßigem Zustand. Ich werde es vielleicht von einem professionellen Buchbinder überholen lassen - ich traue mich da nicht so ganz ran. Merkwürdig ist, dass unter dem Einbandleder im Vorderdeckel eine Art Sigel zu ertasten, nicht aber zu sehen ist. Weiß jemand was das ist und was das soll? Es wäre ja schon eine merkwürdige Art der Verzierung.

Ungeachtet der traurigen Ereignisse im persönlichen, war meine berufliche Woche erfolgreich. Wie schon berichtet, habe ich einen Etsy-Shop eingerichtet. Ich war ziemlich viel damit beschäftigt, dort Artikel einzustellen und zu verstehen, wie das alles funktioniert. Immerhin hat mein Laden 8 Herzchen bekommen, ich bin jetzt Mitglied bei BEST (bookbinding etsy street team) und einem europäischen Team, bei dem ich mich noch gar nicht richtig auskenne. Das Buch, das ich für meinen neuen Etsy-Shop gemacht habe, hat sich noch in der gleichen Nacht verkauft. - Das ist doch ein guter Start!

Other than my personal week, the business side of life went on well. As you know I decided to open an etsy-stop, and I spent much time this week to enter new books, and to understand how everything is done there. I am now a member of BEST (bookbinding etsy street team) and a european team which I don't understand yet. My shop has 8 hearts and the book I made for the start sold the same night. - Probably a good start.

New Journal

Now that I have my new Etsy Shop, I wanted to add something new to it. If you are reminded of my first experiments with leather by this book you are quite right. But there are also a lot of differences: The size - this journal is twice the size of the first one. The new book contains more blank pages (ie less lino prints), a different print, and the kettle stitch is this time hidden beneath the leather.
As before the edges of the pages were individually colored with a sponge. This allows to color these deckled edges - ordinary edge coloring only works with cut pages.

Jetzt wo ich meinen Etsy - Shop eröffnet habe, wollte ich auch was neues reinzustellen haben. Wenn ihr euch an meine ersten Versuche in Leder erinnert fühlt, so ist das wohl nicht ganz falsch. Allerdings ist dieses Buch nun doppelt so groß und dick. Außerdem gibt es noch ein paar andere technische und ästhetische Unterschiede. Die größte Gemeinsamkeit ist wohl dass beide Male die Kanten der Seiten einzeln mit einem Schwamm rot gefärbt wurden und das Ganze dann in schwarzes Leder gebunden wurde. Einen normalen Farbschnitt macht man natürlich anders, aber dafür muss der Buchblock vorher sauber beschnitten sein dun man kann nicht so schöne gerissene Seiten haben.
Außerdem habe ich am Rücken die gleiche Holzperle genommen. Allerdings sieht man bei genauerem Hinsehen, dass der Rücken etwas anders gemacht ist: Der Kettenstich ist diesmal im Inneren des Buches versteckt.

Dieses wunderbare Buch ist am Mittwoch hier angekommen. Das Werk stammt von Robin Canham, einer kanadischen Buchkünstlerin. Sie bietet einen Rückblick auf das Jahr 2008 mit verschiedenen Bildern, die sie interessant auf der Seite angeordnet hat. Macht euch selbst einen Eindruck:

This wonderful book is now mine. I received it in a book swap and it was made by the canadian book artist Robin Canham. The book contains a review of the breaking news and catastrophes of the year 2008. She arranges expressive pictures with short captions. Here are some more photos:

Etsy Shop opened

Ich habe jetzt doch einen Etsy-Shop eröffnet. Da bin ich unter

zu finden. Ich war von Anfang an mit der Aufmachung von DaWanda und vielen Kleinigkeiten dort nicht so sehr zufrieden. Und seit es auf DaWanda nun auch Einstellgebühren gibt, habe ich also beschlossen, trotz der kriselnden Dollar-Kurses einen Etsy Shop zu eröffnen. So ganz plötzlich geht der Umzug aber nicht von statten.
Neue Bücher werde ich wohl eher bei Etsy einstellen. Den Materialverkauf werde ich (erstmal) auf DaWanda belassen.
Das goldene Kochbuch gibt es jetzt also im neuen Shop zu kaufen. Außerdem gibt's da auch das Flügelbuch und meinen Löwen-Druck.

From the start there were some things minor and major that I didn't quite like about DaWanda. So after they now introduced a listing fee I decided to switch to etsy. I won't move in a rush, though. Just I will rather put my books, prints and art work on etsy and materials in particular the colored thread on DaWanda. I'll find out how this will work.

Trial and Error

Me with some paper, a needle, no instructions - this is how I like it, thinking about how I want to look the book when it is finished, finding a solution and doing it. Well, this time it didn't work out quite so good. Apparently, I'll have to find some instructions somewhere. Above you can see the book I tried this weekend, click on the image to see it in more detail. I wanted to use this bright blue hemp string for a binding which created some of the problems - it is really thick and is not evenly strong. Together with such a thread I should have taken thick paper which swallows some of the bulk. Instead I decided to use lined regular writing paper, which was not remotely soft enough.
First I had to decide on how I wanted to stitch leather and pages together. I have never seen an instruction for a binding like this, and wanted to find a method myself. In a first try, I bound every signature individually to the leather strips at the back. This looked good, but the bulk at the spine was unarguably too much with a knot inside every signature. So I rebound it like you can see above. Now I don't like how the thread on the back isn't horizontal.
The closure also came out slightly lopsided and definitely not perpendicular to the front edge of the book. Also the back cover is not well cut. Ah well, it was a try.

I ordered "Limp Bindings from Tallinn" written by Monica Langwe Berg on Friday (it was my birthday, and I still had to spend some money from my grandmother) and now I am waiting for it so show up in my postbox. The next leather binding I'll try will be based on an instruction, and in the meantime I'll try to figure out how to do this style in a satisfying way.

Ich habe mal wieder einfach darauflos gebunden. Mit Leder in der einen Hand, Faden in der anderen, dacht' ich, es könnte wohl nicht so schwer sein. Naja, ich habe das Buch, das ihr oben sehen könnt dreimal neu gebunden und bin noch nicht wirklich zufrieden. (Ein Klick auf das Bild bringt euch auf seine Flickrseite und da kann man es nochmal größer sehen.) Aber jetzt lasse ich es erstmal so wie's ist.
Mir gefällt nicht, dass die Fäden am Rücken so chaotisch wirken und nicht horizontal sind. Das liegt daran, eic ich die Seiten zusammengebunden habe. Da werde ich mir nochmal was Neues ausdenken müssen, wie ich das eigentlich machen will. Überhaupt ein in Leder gebundenes Buch in der Hand zu halten, ist allerdings immer schon was Schönes, selbst wenn's mit der Bindung im Detail nicht so geklappt hat. Das ist schon erstaunlich!
Wenn ihr selbst mal etwas versuchen wollt und auch Instruktionen auf Englisch folgen könnt, werft doch mal einen Blick auf die Serie "Adentures in Medieval Bookbinding" auf dem blog Moon Bindery. Over at the book arts forum we had a book swap with the above title. Rhonda now has notified me of the arrival of my book, so I can finally show you what I did. I am glad that she seems to like it.
The explanations set in courier are part of an explanation sent along with the book, as a small booklet itself.

The Nag Hammadi Codices

The materials used in early single-quire Coptic codices found 1945 near the Egyptian village of Nag Hammadi were leather and papyrus.

The books are closed with 5 long leather strips, one at a closure flap that is attached to the front cover, and 2 on each cover at the head and tail. In the centerfold of the signature a so called ‘stay’ is placed which protects the sewing thread from pulling through the papyrus. The pages are bound with two tackets to a spine strip. In some of the books the tackets reaches through the spine of the covers, in others they are is hidden.

The codices found at Nag Hammadi contain Gnostic texts, among them a Coptic translation of the gospel of Thomas, which had been considered lost for centuries. The existence of a gospel of Thomas was known though notes of the Fathers of the Christian Church, who condemned them as heresy. The discovery of the complete gospel (fragments were known since the 19^th century) was very important for Christian theology and for our understanding of early Christianity.

My interpretation

For the making of any book one has to decide on the details of the binding technique, what materials to use for the cover and the pages inside, and whether and with what content these are to be filled.

For an “up-to-date” interpretation of such an old technique I wanted a book that gives the reader a displaced feeling of modern and old at the same time. ...

Dies sind zwei Bilder meines Beitrags zum Büchertausch auf dem book arts forum. Das Thema war, eine moderne Interpretation der historischen Bindung zu erstellen, die mit den Büchern von Nag Hammadi entdeckt wurde - frühe koptische Bindungen mit nur einer Lage. Ich wollte dem Betrachter des Buchs das Gefühl geben, gleichzeitig was modernes und was altes in der Hand zu halten. Die Bilder oben zeigen das Buch, so wie ich es an Rhonda geschickt habe. Die Seiten, die ihr oben sehen könnt sind allerdings scans und Laserdrucke der im Original mit Ölfarbe bedruckten Seiten. Es folgen noch ein Making-Of und Bilder eines weiteren dieser Bücher, das ich Original nennen will. Tatsächlich habe ich es allerdings verschränkt mit dem Buch für den Swap gemacht: Die Seiten im 'Original' sind diejenigen, die ich original mit Ölfarbe bedruckt habe, aber die Bindung und die Cover habe ich erst gemacht, nachdem das Buch für den Swap fertig war. After all pieces were ready I scanned the prints, laser-printed them so that they fit into a signature (the original prints form two signatures), and assembled all the pieces. After I finished the piece for Rhonda I bound the original prints into the following book. I will try to sell it together in a box with the wooden wedges and a small booklet that explains my intentions and the materials. The box still needs to be made. I want to place them into an old Laptop, but I am still struggling with preparing it for that task. Enjoy the pictures. (Can you spot the differences to Rhondas book?)

Nachdem alle Teile fertig waren, habe ich die Originaldrucke eingescannt, als eine Lage ausgedruckt (im Original sind das zwei Lagen) und habe alles zusammengesetzt. Als ich das Buch für Rhonda fertig hatte, habe ich die Originalseiten nochmal auf ähnliche Weise gebunden. Also nochmal Boards vorbereiten, - aber diesmal wusste ich wie's geht und habe keine neuen Blasen bekommen. Na, könnt ihr die Unterschiede zu Rhondas Buch sehen? Den größten Unterschied kann man nicht sehen, sondern nur riechen - es riecht nach Druckfarbe, und zwar ziemlich stark! Viel Spaß mit den Bildern:

It will be the first book I ever received in a swap, actually, the first handbound book I own that was not done by me, and one of the first that I will hold in my hands. Back from Bristol

Ich bin nun also zurück von einer sehr schönen und sehr erholsamen Reise nach Bristol. Und in meinem Google Reader warten 61 Blog Einträge, in meiner Mailingliste habe ich 53 ungelesene Nachrichten und mein Blogroll hier zeigt auch noch jede Menge Ungelesenes an. Also es wird eine Weile dauern, bis ich das alles aufgearbeitet habe. - Und es gibt auch eine Menge zu erzählen.
Das Bild oben zeigt übrigens eine Ansicht von Bristol, Blickrichtung ist der Hafen, und ich stehe auf dem King George V Platz.

I am back after a very exciting and relaxing week in Bristol (yes, both is possible at the same time). I have a lot of blogs, emails and news to get though. If you are waiting for an answer on something, I beg for some patience - I am planning to do all this in the next days. Toad Lodge
We (my husband and I) were staying in "The Toad Lodge". There was a really amazing collection of anything that at least remotely reminded of a toad on the premises. Ceramic sculptures anywhere, also the sheets on the bed had toads and frogs as decorations, and of course all clocks were toad shaped.

Ich hatte nicht erwartet, "Cheers!" ohne ein Bier in der Hand zu hören. Deshalb war ich eher verblüfft, als mir gleich am ersten Tag eine Kassiererin in einer Buchhandlung mein Wechselgeld mit diesem Gruß gab. Eigentlich wollte ich daraufhin alle Gelegenheiten, bei denen ich das gehört habe aufschreiben, aber ich habe noch am ersten Tag aufgegeben. Anscheinend ist es einfach ein freundlicher Laut, den man von sich gibt, wenn man sonst nichts zu sagen hat, kann sowohl Entschuldigung, als auch Dank oder eine Art Friedensschluss einleiten und lässt sich wohl am ehesten mit einem Lächeln übersetzen.

Books I bought or read in Bristol
This are the books I bought on my stay. The first book was the white one in front from Diogenes Verlag - I didn't exactly buy it in Bristol but on the train station in Germany before I entered the train that brought me to my plane to Bristol. I was reading it the first day. "The Book Thief" is obviously a book about books, and a rather interesting one: It is the story of a German girl in Nazi Germany, who has on the one hand difficulties to read and write (with her 10 years she is nearly illiterate), but is so fascinated by books that she keeps stealing (and eventually reading them). But mainly it is a book about the cruelties of war, explained at the example of WW2, told by no-one less than death himself. - A dark reading.
To my surprise "The End of Mr. Y" is also a book about a book. The title of the book is actually the title of the book that is the main driving force in the story. I was slightly dissapointed by the story: The characters are very stereotype (there is the ex-priest discussing creation vs evolution with this biologist for example), and in some details the explanations for their actions are not satisfactory. But it is written in a gripping way, and I could hardly put the book down before I had it finished.
The kite-runner is the book I wanted to buy initially, then there was this 3 for 2 offer, so I had to choose two more - you understand that, right? - but it is the only one I havn't even begun to read yet.

Eunoia
Oben seht ihr ein Foto von allen Büchern, die ich in Bristol gekauft und/oder gelesen habe ("Früher war mal mehr Strand" habe ich in Bristol gelesen, aber noch in Deutschland gekauft, "Kite Runner" habe ich in Bristol gekauft, aber noch nicht gelesen). Über die interessanteren dieser Bücher - aiaiaiaiaiZZZZZZbummmm von David Torrets zum Beispiel, Supertoys und El Super werde ich vielleicht später nochmal erzählen (als Füller in diesem Blog, wenn ich nicht genug eigenes produziere, über das ich schreiben kann).
Eunoia ist das Buch, das ich am ersten Tag gekauft habe, und die Verkäuferin mir mein Wechselgeld mit einem "Cheers!" zurückgab. Als ich an dem Tag den Bücherladen betreten habe, wollte ich eigentlich nur einen Stadtführer und einen Stadtplan kaufen. Und dann fiel mir Eunoia ins Auge - und ich musste es kaufen! Es passt so gut zu dem Roman "la disparition" von Georges Perec, das mein Mann letztens nach Hause brachte: Ein mehr als 300 Seiten starker Roman auf Französisch, der *vollständig* ohne den Buchstaben 'e' auskommt.
Eunoia hat ein Kapitel für jeden Vokal, so dass im Kapitel "A" dann als einziger Vokal das 'a' vorkommt. Eher als eine zusammenhängende Geschichte, lesen wir hier eine Aneinanderreihung von Sätzen. Ein Exzerpt aus diesem Kapitel:
"Hassan can ask that a barman at a bar tap a cask and draw a man a draft (half a dram, a glass): marc, grappa and armagnac, malt, arrack and schnapps. Gangs that act as crass as Harvard grads at a frat (Gamma Kappa Lambda) clack tankards and gawk at a gal, as a gal dabs at black mascara."

Angestachelt von dem Vorbild, haben mein Mann und ich abends in der Kneipe nach entsprechenden schönen Sätzen im Deutschen gesucht. Neben Sätzen, die nur einen Vokal enthalten, haben wir vor allem solche gebildet, die zwei gegebenen konsequent abwechseln. Einige Beispiele:

Lars mag an Matz' Aalstand, dass Aba an Matz' Aalstand, Lars anlacht.
Obwohl Horst oft Borschtsch kotzt, kocht Horst oft Borschtsch.
Hilke will ein feines Spiel mit dem Stift gewinnen.

Wiederholungen haben wir dabei, anders als unser Vorbild, allerdings nicht vermieden. Vielleicht kriegt ihr ja noch weitere und vielleicht schönere hin? - Es würde mich freuen, Beispiele hier zu Gesicht zu bekommen.

Arnolfini
Gleich an meinem zweiten Tag in Bristol hatte ich eine Verabredung mit dem Archivar der Galerie Arnolfini, Julian Warren. Leider war die Galerie gerade mitten zwischen zwei Ausstellung, so dass ich da nichts sehen konnte. Das war einer der Gründe, weshalb ich überhaupt Email-Kontakt aufgenommen habe, und da wurde mir angeboten, mir die Bücher der letzten Ausstellung "the Cover of a Book is the Beginning of a Journey" zu zeigen. Ich bin da am Donnerstag Morgen mit einem etwas mulmigen Gefühl hingegangen: War es zu viel verlangt, dass mir jemand extra Bücher zeigt? Julian Warren stellte sich als ausserordentlich nett und geduldig heraus. Er setzte mir nicht etwa einen Karton mit Büchern vor die Nase und überließ es mir, mich zurecht zu finden, sondern hat mir eine Menge über die Bücher erzählt und ich habe richtig viel gelernt!

On my second day in Bristol I had an appointment with Julian Warren the archivist of the galery Arnolfini. Unfortunately the galery was closed for the whole week during my stay, due to rearrangements: The exhibition 'The cover of a book is the beginning of a journey" just closed a few days earlier. To my joy and surprise Julian was willing to show me all the books from the exhibition in a private meeting. He was so kind and patient when he realized that I am really just at the beginning of my journey and hardly know anything about performance artists and their approach to books. It was mainly those books I saw there: Not handbound editions but mostly very cheap, 'democratic', approaches to distribute art. Most of the books contained some imperative, wanted to make you the performing artist. I really wished I had seen the exhibit which gave the visitors room to try all these things. On the other hand - in that case I wouldn't have had the opportunity of this private lesson. And I really learned a lot on that day.

U.W.E. and Sarah Bodman
On my last day I met Sarah Bodman at the University of West England, which is located at a pleasant one hour walk from the Toad Lodge where I stayed in Bristol. After showing me the workshops and explaining some of the printing mechanisms (I was especially curious about them and them big machines), she let me look through her personal collection of artist's books. I had her permission to take as many photos as I like, and so I did. I'll keep them for future posts here. On the picture above you see the collection still in boxes. Sahrah said that when she last counted them it was more than 500 of them. After two boxes I was 'booked out' and just couldn't take any more in. I noticed I only flicked through them quickly without really understanding or reading what they said. So then we talked a bit about some of the books that I pulled out of these huge stacks.

Am letzten Tag habe ich mich dann noch mit Sarah Bodman an der Universität von West England getroffen. Die Fakultät der UWE an der sie arbeitet, liegt etwas außerhalb von Bristol, und bescherte mir einen wunderschönen, einstündigen Morgenspaziergang entlang des Avon, des Flusses, der durch Bristol fließt. Nachdem mich Sahrah freundliche aufgenommen und mit Tee wieder etwas aufgewärmt hatte, hat sie mich durch die Werkstätten geführt und mir auf meinen Wunsch hin die Druckmaschinen gezeigt und einiges dazu erklärt. Es gab Druckmaschinen in allen Größen Formen, Farben und für alle Techniken, ob Textsatz mit alten Typen, ob Holz- oder Bleilettern, Lithographie, Linoldruck, Siebdruck,... einfach jede Menge. Und zu allem wurde mir ein bisschen was erklärt. Nach diesem Rundgang, durfte ich dann in ihrer Sammlung von Büchern stöbern und auch Fotos von ihnen machen. Das hebe ich mir allerdings für zukünftige Blog-Posts auf! Oben seht ihr auf dem Foto die Kisten, in denen die ganzen Schätze liegen. Sahrah sagte, als sie das letzte Mal gezählt habe, seien es mehr als 500 gewesen. - Ich habe nur einen Bruchteil davon geschafft durchzusehen, bevor ich einfach nichts mehr aufnehmen konnte.

Insgesamt war es ein sehr schöner, lehrsamer und inspirierender Aufenthalt. Ich habe so viel gelernt, dass ich noch eine Weile brauchen werde, bis das alles Verarbeitet ist. Meinem Notizbuch habe ich jedenfalls jede Menge neuer Ideen für zukünftige Bücher hinzugefügt.
Ich habe jede Menge ausgesprochen netter und hilfsbereiter Menschen getroffen, und freue mich schon auf eine hoffentlich baldige Rückkehr. Zum Abschied noch ein Bild aus Bath, danke für's Lesen.

Good bye for a week, new project

Im Moment bin ich mal wieder ein kleines bisschen gestresst und unter Zeitdruck: Ich nehme an meinem ersten Bücher-Tausch auf dem Book Art Forum teil. Da sollen wir am 31. Januar spätestens unsere Bücher abschicken. Eigentlich noch ein bisschen hin, aber ich fahre nächsten Dienstag erstmal für eine Woche nach Bristol, England. Ich bin schon gespannt darauf, was es da so zu sehen gibt. Natürlich habe ich mich schon ein bisschen nach 'bücherartigen' Sehenswürdigkeiten umgesehen und werde anschließend hoffentlich einiges zu erzählen haben. Aber erstmal liegt diese kurze Urlaubsreise ganz schön im Weg meiner Pläne. Für den Tausch habe ich einige gute Ideen (hoffentlich gut) aber da muss ich auch noch einiges an Hirnschmalz reinstecken, bevor das wirklich ein Buch wird.
Gleichzeitig mache ich die fliegenden Bücher fertig, schlage mich mit Etsy herum, und habe das Projekt Waldspaziergang immernoch nicht ganz aufgegeben.

I am taking part in my first book swap at the book arts forum, where the deadline is 31th of January. And I feel this day starting to put some serious pressure on me. It is not like I havn't spend thoughts on the book for the swap, I even worked on it for several days now, but still there is much more thought needed to make the different pieces that I have in mind and on my desk a complete book. Additional pressure comes from a trip I am going to make next week: From Tuesday until Tuesday I'll be staying in Bristol, England. I am looking forward to my stay, which will of course include visits at Arnolfini and the book arts center. I am sure I will have some interesting things to tell you afterwards. But still, this visit is quite in my way for finishing the swap book. Moreover I have other projects to finish right now, including the flying books and the Waldspaziergang (walk in the woods).

Diejenigen unter meinen Leserinnen und Lesern, die schon länger dabei sind, kennen wahrscheinlich schon meine Eigenart, mitten in hektischen Zeiten unbedingt was Neues anfangen zu wollen. Die Bilder, die ihr hier seht, sind ein gutes Beispiel dafür. - Aber mein eskapistischer Anfall war kurz und ich habe mich gleich wieder meinen laufenden Projekten Zugewandt. Da die Seiten nur mit Filzstift und Buntstifen bemalt sind, lässt sich das also super mitnehmen, und ich habe vor, das Buch in Bristol fertig zu machen. Es wird die Geschichte erzählen, wie ich mich entschlossen habe, erstmal Bücher statt Mathematik zu machen.
Those of you have have been reading this blog for some time now, probably know that in times when I feel stressed I usually start something new. That is stupid because it adds to the pressure, but that's just like it is. When I have an idea in these tense times, I feel like I have to start this immediately to not forget it. And it provides distraction from the more pressing matter of course. The pictures you see here are a good example of this. It is the stick figure story of my decision to not work as a mathematician but as a book artist for a while. Or rather - it will become a story. My escapistic attack only lasted a short time and I turned back to my more pressing project. But I am planning to finish it in Bristol's cafes. What do you do to escape deadline terror and time pressure?

Die Fliegenden Bücher fliegen wieder. Ich habe gestern einen ganzen Tag Arbeit hineingesteckt, um alles wieder schön zu reparieren und nun wirklich fest zu machen. Die Idee, nochmal Salzteig zu machen, die kaputten Cover zu ersetzen oder nochmal ganz neue zu machen, habe ich verworfen. Die Klebstellen scheinen gut zu halten und sind kaum sichtbar; und statt nochmal mit Salzteig zu arbeiten, würde ich mich dann vielleicht doch eher anderem Material zuwenden, das weniger schnell bricht. Wenn ich Knochen bekommen kann, versuche ich vielleicht das. Wahrscheinlicher ist wohl ein Versuch in Holz.

Aber zuerst will ich dieses Mobile doch noch fertig bekommen - immerhin gilt es noch ein wenig Arbeit zu investieren. Wie gestern schon erwäht fehlt da ja noch ein Streben, den ich heute gekauft habe. - Aber der muss jetzt eingearbeitet werden. Außerdem hatte ich ursprünglich vor, noch mehr Zeug reinzuhängen. On ich das wirklich will, daran habe ich mittlerweile einige Zweifel. Ich werde mehr davon erzählen, wenn ich mich entscheide, sie hinzuzufügen.

The flying books are up and flying again, after another whole day spent with careful repairs. Now they look almost like before. Only if you know what you are looking for, you can see small rips at the surface of some covers. - But some of them were there before and don't even come from a break but simply from drying unevenly. I would like to make another piece from bone ore wood - so I decided not to spent more time on repeating the making of replacement salt dough covers. What I like about the salt dough is that is has an almost organic quality to it. The small salt grain look just like pores, especially on the slightly pink covers. The pink comes from adding beet juice to the raw dough, by the way. But although I like the salt dough - an the other hand it is really not the material you want to use to bind books in: It breaks easily and it is hard to handle during the drying process. So now I am rather moving on the complete this piece. - I'll keep you informed on how things are going. Kurz vor Weihnachten habe ich ein Daumenkino vorgestellt, das ich mal gemacht habe. Das war ganz schön schlecht anzusehen, hier nochmal eine Film-Version, die ich mittlerweile erstellt habe:

Shortly before Christmas I showed you an old flip book I made. The photos were really a pain to watch - sorry for that - now I made a short film from them. My husband (who was the original recipient of the book) says he like the turtle in the background best about the whole film. Ah, if he new how much time I needed to make this for him ;-)

Another update: Last year I colored paper by the use of pumpkin seed oil and used it to bind the following book:

Das Einbandpapier wurde mit Kürbiskernöl gefärbt und verliert langsam seine Farbe. Mittlerweile sieht es so aus:
Pumpkin seed oil looses its color when it is exposed to light. The paper had initially a deep green, when I bound that book it had turned to a pastel but still saturated green. By now the book looks like this:Natürlich ist das Setting ein ganz anderes: Die ersten Bilder habe ich bei natürlichem Licht draußen gemacht, während ich die an einem viel zu dunklen Tag, nachmittags in meinem Arbeitszimmer gemacht habe. Aber ich denke, man kann schön sehen, wie sich die Farbe von einem pastelligem, aber kräftigen Grün zu einem sehr zarten Grünston verändert hat; dabei ist er auch etwas mehr ins Gelbe gewechselt. Meine Finger und der Faden haben sich kaum verändert, vielleicht können die ja als Referenz dienen.

Of course the whole lighting situation is different. The first pictures were taken by natural light outside, while this was done just now, in the dark afternoon in my studio. But maybe you can take by fingers and the red sewing thread as a reference. The covers are still slightly green, but it is very faint now and turned towards a light yellow. We were visited by my father in law yesterday who looked at it and seemed quite impressed - although it has lost its vivid color. He said something like: "This is amazing, I thought you were doing bibliophil editions which I considered boring! You should make people touch your books. This is a whole new experience." This made me quite happy (tralala). But how should I incorporate his advice? I really would like to let you touch my books - do you want to come over here? Flying books - the project moves on

So langsam dürfte klar werden, worum es in diesem Projekt geht: Um eine Art Mobile. Nachdem ich einige Tage nach Gestänge gesucht, die gewählten Stangen dann abwechselnd lasiert und abgeschmirgelt habe, habe ich gestern mit einem ersten Versuch für's Aufhängen begonnen.

After you have seen today's pictures it should be obvious that I am planing a kind of mobile with the flying books. After some days of searching for suitable rods, and sanding and painting them, yesterday I was at the point where I could try a first version to hang them. This is how it looked like yesterday, after a long day's work at 1 a.m.:So weit bin ich dann gestern mit dem ersten Versuch gekommen. Ich mag den generellen Eindruck, den das Ding macht. Das Foto wird dem Mobile nicht ganz gerecht - Teile sind noch verdeckt und überhaupt ist es eindruckvoller wenn man daneben steht. Mir kommt plötzlich mein Raum viel höher vor, und das ganze Gestänge macht einen sehr schönen Eindruck! Aber in diesem Arangement werde ich das Ganze wohl nicht belassen, weil vieles einfach gerade nach unten hänget, auch deshalb sind die Bücher noch ziemlich nah beieinander. Im Moment hängen die beiden größten Stangen, die man im Bild gerade noch so sehen kann, einzeln an meiner Deckenlampe; die sollen durch eine stärkere Stange natürlich noch verbunden werden. Außerdem möchte ich gerne, dass noch mehr Bewegung in das Ganze kommt. Ich werde wohl die Fäden durch (Sprung-) Federn ersetzen und vielleicht Windflügel an die Enden der Stangen setzten, damit sie sich im Luftzug drehen.

This is just a tentative hang up and I won't keep it like this. But it gives a first impression of the final piece and I like the feel of it. The photo doesn't do it justice. Is is astonishingly big and wide as it is and it will get bigger.
The upmost and largest rods near the ceiling are both attached to my lamp instead of another rod which will connect the two - and separate them more than it does now. I want to bring in more movement and will try to do this by exchanging the strings by springs. Furthermore I am thinking about adding wind paddles (vanes?) so that it moves with the air currents. At the moment, everything on the arrangement is stuck together without any glue by these two connections sewn from cotton tape which hold quite firm:
Im Moment ist die ganze Installation lediglich durch Steckverbindungen zusammengehalten, die ich aus Baumwollband genäht habe. Das hält ziemlich gut und ich würde es gerne dabei belassen, damit das leicht auf- und abzubauen ist. Allerdings bin ich mir nicht sicher, wie gut das hält, wenn die Bücher erstmal richtig in Bewegung kommen.

So ganz fertig bin ich also noch nicht. Außerdem werde ich ein- oder mehrere Bücher nochmal machen müssen. Gestern Abend habe ich die Hänger von der Lampe abgenommen, damit sie nicht herunterfallen und womöglich die Bücher kaputt gehen. Als ich sie dann heute morgen aufhänge wollte, kam alles in Schräglage, ein Buch fiel ab und hin, und daraufhin gleich 4 weitere. Mein Liebligsstück ist dabei auch zerbrochen. Hier ist es in noch heilem Zustand von gestern morgen:An der Stelle, wo das Band durch das Loch fasst, ist der Salzteig durchgebrochen. Ich versuche es gerade zu kleben, aber wahrscheinlich werde ich das Buch nochmal machen. Zwei andere Bücher sind ebenfalls etwas, aber nicht ganz so stark lädiert. - Wahrscheinlich sollte ich doch auf die praktischen Steckverbindungen verzichten und alles bombenfest machen, damit nicht wieder was herunterfällt.

For the night I took the mobile down, in fear it might come down and books may break. This morning I wanted to rehang it. When lifting the mobile by lifting the upmost hanger one book after the other lifts and swings free. Therefore, for a moment there is no counterweight to support the shorter of the hanging pieces and a rod may be very close to vertical. In one such moment one of the connections slipped and one of the books banged on the table with a sound, that made my heart leap. The missing book destroyed the equilibrium finally, and one books ofter the other, four in total, smacked on the table. Unfortunately the books that hit the rim of a glass board lying on the table broke. Two of them just lost a corner that was easy to reattach, but the piece you see above which was my favorite piece of the collection broke more severely. The upper half of the wing, just above the hole through which the tape is slung, broke completely off. It is lying there now, waiting for the glue to dry and see whether it still works. But I think, I'll make a new hanger to replace it. It feels strange how bad I feel about it breaking - I have to tell myself: It was just a thing.

Origami Box Tutorial

Heute mache ich drei Kreuze im Kalender: Die Federsortiererei ist endlich vorbei und das letzte geflügelte Buch ist endlich fertig geworden. Im Laufe der nächsten Woche, sollte ich Bilder vom fertigen Objekt vorzeigen können. Auf dem Bild oben habe ich Federn vor allem nach Farbe (ich wollte nur wirklich weiße Federn für das letzte Buch benutzen), aber auch ein bisschen nach Form (die beiden Kisten in der Mitte enthalten beide weiße Federn) sortieren. Zum Sortieren habe ich diese Papierboxen benutzt, die wirklich einfach und schnell zu machen sind. Ich habe schon im Kindergarten gelernt, sie zu machen und sie gerne als schnell gemachten Tischpapierkorb in Schule und Uni benutzt.
Ich werde euch gleich mal zeigen, wie die gemacht werden.

Today I finished the last of my flying books. Finally I am through with sorting feathers. I think, next time when I see a goose or hen,your hear me screaming"Nooooo, this awful feathers!" I got my supply from cutting open a cushion and many of the feathers inside were broken or too tiny to be used for this project, so I had to sort through them. I sometimes also sorted them according to color or shape. At first that was fun - they are so soft to the touch, is was a good feeling pushing a hand into that cushion, pulling out handfuls of this tender feathers. But they just got everywhere. Yesterday evening when I got under a blanket at the tele, I noted some feathers on that, too. They crawl into the nose and make me sneeze, they get stuck in the fabric of my clothes, - they are awful and everywhere, and after today I'll have to do some serious vacuum cleaning here. Anyway, for sorting the feathers I used these paper boxes that you can see in the picture above, and today I am going to show you how to make them.

1. Get a square piece of paper / Als erstes brauchen wir ein quadratisches Stück Papier

If you don't have one at hand, you can easily make one, by folding the top of a piece of paper you have to the side, thus forming the diagonal of your paper, and cutting off the tail. You'll want to fold the diagonals anyway, so this is a good start. Wenn gerade kein quadratisches Stück Papier zur Hand ist, kann man sich das einfach machen, indem man ein
rechtwinkliges Stück Papier so faltet, dass die obere Kante auf eine der seitlichen zu liegen kommt, und schneidet dann den Rest unten einfach weg. Die Falz, die man dann auf seinem Papier hat, ist eine der Diagonalen des Quadrats, und die wollen wir später sowieso falten.
Wer eine Schachtel mit Deckel möchte, braucht zwei etwas unterschiedlich große Stücke Papier. Ein kleineres Quadrat kann man leicht bekommen, indem man etwas weiter innen, senkrecht zu einer der kurzen Kanten des Dreiecks schneidet, die man bekommt, wenn man das Quadrat entlang seiner Diagonalen faltet. Klingt kompliziert, ist aber einfach, wie das folgende Bild zeigt:If you want the box to have a lid, you want one of the squares slightly smaller than the other. For reducing the size of a square it is also best to fold it along the diagonal into a triangle and cut a strip off square to one of the shorter sides, as you can see on the picture above.

2. Find the center of your square / Die Mitte des Quadrats finden

Das geht ganz einfach, indem man beide Diagonalen falten. Da wo sie sich schneiden, ist die Mitte.
Just fold both diagonals of your suqare. The middle is, where those meet.

3. Fold all the corners into the middle / alle Ecken zur Mitte falten
Now your paper should look like this:
Das Papier sollte nun so aussehen, wie auf dem Bild oben.

4. Fold the corners to the further crossing / Die Ecken nochmal weiter nach innen falten
Wir wollen letztendlich das ganze Papier in lauter kleinere Quadrate einteilen. Jetzt erstmal alle Ecken nochmal nach innen falten, bis zu der Stelle, wo die Diagonale die weiter entferte neue Falz trifft:In the end we want to produce a pattern of small squares on the paper. For now fold each corner to the opposite crossing of the old diagonal with the new fold created in the last step as you can see above. When done with all four corners your paper should look like this:
Und so sollte das Papier aussehen, wenn ihr alle vier Ecken so gefaltet habt.

5. Turn the paper around and fold the corners back to the nearest crossing / Das Papier wenden und die Ecken zur nächsten Überkreuzung von Faltlinien falten. Jetzt sollte das Blatt gleichmäßig in quadratische Muster eingeteilt sein.
Now the paper is patterned evenly.

6. Last two folds parallel to the edges of the paper / die letzten beiden Faltungen sind parallel zu den Papierkanten

Dreh' das Papier wieder um. So sieht es fertig gefaltetet aus. Jetzt bauen wir endlich die Schachtel daraus. Turn your paper round again. This is, how it should look like. Now we start assembling the box

7. The first two side walls / die ersten beiden Seitenwände
The bottom of the box is formed by the inner four squares, marked on the following picture:
Der Boden der Box besteht aus den inneren vier Quadraten, die ich hier markiert habe:Wähle zwei gegenüberliegende Seiten dieses Quadrats und stelle die Seitenwände dort auf, wie auf den folgenden Bildern zu sehen ist.

Choose two opposite sites of this square and put up the side walls as shown in the following pictures:
Die Ecken, die wir in Schritt 5 zurückgefaltet haben, kommen dabei über den markierten Boden zu liegen.

8. third wall fold / die dritte Wand wird aufgestelltBeim Aufstellen der dritten Seite wird das Papier nach innen gefaltet, wie man oben sehen kann. Und zwar entland der Falte, die wir in Schritt 6 gemacht haben. Damit die Schachtel gut steht, am besten die Kanten, an denen die Seiten aufeinanderstoßen nochmal fest zusammendrücken.Das Ergebnis sollte aussehen, wie auf dem folgenden Bild.

When you put up the third wall, make sure to fold the paper inwards like you can see in the upper photo. The fold is done along the fold that we made in step 6. To make sure the box is stable, press all edges firmly. The result should look like this:
8. Repeat this step with the fourth wall / die vierte Wand geht jetzt ganz genauso

Den Versuch war's wert

This is definitely not a book to use: It opens and closes extremely bad because the salt dough warped during the drying process and moreover the salt dough covers turned out quite fragile. I am rather frustrated with this outcome, but it was worth the try: I learned some things about salt dough if nothing else.

Mal wieder ein Buch in der Reihe 'verzwirnt und zugeleimt'. Die Salzteigdeckel haben sich während des Trocknens ganz schön gewellt und das Buch lässt sich nicht ordentlich öffnen und schließen. Einen Versuch war es wohl trotzdem wert, immerhin sehen die halb vergrabenen Speicherchips doch ganz interessant aus. - Aber wie jeder Misserfolg ist auch dieser recht frustrierend.Das hier war ein Versuch mit einem etwas anderen Salzteig (enthält zusätzlich zu Mehl auch noch Stärke und ist deshalb etwas feiner). Aber insbesondere hatte ich da raus, wie die Cover gerade bleiben.

This book was done with a second batch of dough a few days later, this time the covers stayed flat. It wasn't dried in the oven but just at room temperature - this took several days.

The first book of the year

The first book I made this year: A lined journal intended for your collected recipes. - A longstich/coptic hybrid, with a decorative stich used for binding on bands. The book still opens completely flat but has a protective spine (not a concertina this time).
It has the covers and some decorative papers from a 80s cook book. The insides of the covers are decorated with two of the former index pages. It opens completely flat and has 176 pages (plus 12 pages with photographs).

DaWanda führt ab dem 15. Januar Einstellgebühren ein (eine Verkaufsprovision wollten sie natürlich schon immer haben). Diese Gelegenheit nutze ich, nochmal über andere Plattformen nachzudenken. Etsy würde sich vielleicht anbieten. Die haben natürlich ebenfalls Einstellpreise, allerdings gefällt mir die Aufmachung besser und die Hoffnung wäre, dass es besser zu bedienen ist. DaWanda ist ein ständiger Ärger, weil das Interface sooo langsam ist. Der Nachteil von Etsy wäre, dass da alle Geschäfte in US-Dollar abgewickelt werden müssen, und damit die Preise, die ich letztendlich erzielen kann, vom Dollar-Kurs abhängen. Außerdem ist ein Wechsel der Plattform natürlich insgesamt wenig vorteilhaft - gerade habe ich angefangen, einiges auf DaWanda zu verkaufen und habe in der Vorweihnachtszeit einige Bewertungspunkt gesammelt. Hmmm, schwierig, schwierig...

Dieses Buch wird demnächst zu verkaufen sein, ich werde dann erzählen, ob auf DaWanda oder auf Etsy.

Monotype - Monotypie

'Monoprint' werden Drucke genannt, bei denen man zwar eine Anzahl von Kopien erstellen kann, aber keine zwei exakt gleich sind. Wie genau ein Monoprint entsteht ist dabei nicht wichtig. Wenn zum Beispiel mit einem weichen Druckstock gedruckt wird, der sich bei jedem Abdruck verformt (etwa ungehärtetes Fimo), dann erhält man eine Reihe ähnlicher, aber nicht identischer Abdrücke. Aber auch durch nicht gleichen Andruck, durch Mischen von Farben (eine Mischung ist selten exakt wiederherstellbar) oder durch nachträgliche Kolorationen können Monoprints erstellt werden. Letztendlich scheint es auch eine Interpretationssache zu sein, ob ein Künstler seinen Handdruck Monoprint nennt, oder nicht. Letztendlich nutzt sich auch die Kupferplatte in die ein Bild gestochen wurde, ähnlich wie der weiche Fimo ab - nur halt langsamer.

Monotype ist nun wirklich 'mono' - es gibt nur einen einzigen Abdruck. Das Bild oben ist so entstanden:
Ich habe schwarze Druckfarbe auf einer glatten Platte verstrichen. Dann habe ich ein Blatt Papier vorsichtig auf die bestrichene Fläche und darüber ein weiteres Blatt gelegt.Auf dem zweiten Blatt habe ich dann einfach mit einem Bleistift gezeichnet. Der Druck hat dann aber ein deutlich anderes Aussehen als eine Bleistiftzeichnung. Das Schöne dabei ist, dass man durch verschieden starken Druck auch verschieden viel Farbe aufs Papier bekommt (z.B. um den Schein der Kerzen zu malen, habe ich da weniger fest aufgedrückt).

Das Bild unten ist nach der gleichen Technik entstanden:
Monoprinting is a technique where several copies of one block are not identical. For example if you carve some motif in a block of polymer clay, and you start printing with the clay still soft. With this block you will get several similar but not identical prints before the block will be pressed so flat that you can't get another copy. This would be a monoprint. You could also produce monoprints by handpainting on them after printing, or by mixing the colors for each print anew. It is not a term reserved for a special technique, and whether or not a given print is a monoprint is something the artist has to answer for you. In the end, a copper copper etching is not so much different from the polymer clay example - only it will wear off more slowly.

Monotype is really 'mono', the print only exists one time. (Sometimes one can get a ghost image, but this is a special case.)
I made the two above prints as follows: First I covered an acrylic plate evenly with oil based printing color. Then I laid a piece of paper on the plate and another sheet of waste paper on top. Then I sketched with a pencil on the waste paper, thus rubbing the black color on the paper which then carries the print.

Another way of monotyping is to take away color from the plate and then evenly press paper on this block. This is how I first started with monoprinting. Because I was working with remains of color after making a lino print, I had too few color for it to turn out nicely, but I'll show it to you anyway: My first self protraitOben sieht man einen Monotypie-Versuch, der mangels Farbe nicht ganz so geworden ist. Ich habe da mit den Resten gearbeitet, die ich gerade noch vom Drucken auf der Platte hatte. Aber es war mein erster Versuch überhaupt, deswegen wollte ich ihn mal vorzeigen. Außerdem gefällt es mir als Selbstprotrait dann wieder eigentlich ganz gut, diese feinen Linien, die auf den ersten Blick kaum vom Rauschen zu unterscheiden sind.
Auch hier habe ich als erstes eine glatte Platte gleichmäßig mit Farbe eingestrichen. Dann habe ich mit Holzspießen Farbe von der Platte weggekratzt und einen Abdruck auf Papier gemacht.
Statt nur mit Stäbchen zu kratzen, kann man auch mit Wattestäbchen, Tüchern usw. Farbe runternehmen. Das folgende war ein späterer Druck mit mehr Farbe: Selbstportrait Nr. 5Here you see another self portrait, now with better color coverage. The red and blue was added after printing (red= edding felt tip, blue = gel pen). I was working much too hurriedly - especially when working with oil based colors you have hours time in which the paint won't dry out.
These monotype techniques are really fun and you can do amazing pictures with this latter technique if you are better at drawing and sketching than I am. First you scratch a picture in the oil and then you add lighting to your drawing by the use of cotton swaps or with a piece of cloth.
For me it was fun to try. I like the special feel of the pictures - but it is not really my medium. I'll rather stick to book binding and some lino printing. But you should give it a try yourself!

Ich habe mich beim Zeichnen viel zu sehr beeilt - eigentlich hat man Stunden Zeit bevor the Farbe zu trocken wird. Es macht Spaß so zu arbeiten, weil es schnell geht und mit haben die Ergebnisse irgendwie gut gefallen. Das Druckbild hat etwas ganz Eigenes - probiert's mal aus!
Aber wirklich mein Ding ist es wohl nicht. Dafür zeichne ich einfach nicht gut genug... Demnächst gibt's also eher wieder Linolschnitte.
