500 Handmade Books part 1

Ich will heute über mein neues Buch 500 Handmade Books. Inspiring Interpretations of a Timeless Form (Editoren: Suzanne J. E. Tourtillot, Linda Knopp) sprechen. Wie ihr auf dem Bild sehen könnt, gibt es wirklich eine Menge Bilder von Büchern, die ich mir nochmal genauer ansehen will, die ich auf die eine oder andere Art bemerkenswert fand'. Dabei bin ich noch nicht einmal zur Hälfte durch!
Zum Inhalt: Nach einer zwei Seiten langen Einleitung folgen auf über 400 Seiten Fotos von Büchern. Die Bilder haben nur kurze Unterschriften, in denen der/die KünstlerIn, der Titel des Buches, Technik und verwendete Materialien knapp erwähnt werden. Im wesentlichen ist es also ein Bilderbuch.
Am Ende findet man eine kurze Information über den Juror Steve Miller und eine alphabetische Liste der KünstlerInnen mit Seitenangaben.


Mein Leseerlebnis: Der Index am Ende ist bitter nötig. Die Präsentation der Bücher folgt keiner mir offensichtlichen Reihenfolge. Mehrere Bücher der gleichen Künstler sind weit voneinander entfernt im Buch zu finden. Es gibt sogar ein Buch von dem es zwei Bilder gibt, von denen eines sich auf Seite 28 das andere auf Seite 167 findet.

Das Buch lebt von den wundervollen Büchern, die man hier abgebildet sieht. Sie reichen von Büchern in sehr klassischem Stil bis zu sich aufgehängt rankenden und windenden Büchern, Büchern in erstaunlichen Formen bis lose Blättersammlungen in Boxen, von Covern aus Metall, über Holz zu solchen aus Fimo. Die große Reichweite in der sich Buchkunst bewegt wird schnell deutlich.

Ich hätte allerdings gerne mehr Info über die abgebildeten Bücher zu bekommen: sind die Seiten leer oder haben sie einen Inhalt? Manchmal ist das vom Bild her klar, aber längst nicht immer. Wenn es einen Inhalt gibt: Wer ist der Autor? Da selten etwas dazu bemerkt ist, gehe ich davon aus, das BuchbinderIn und KünstlerIn übereinstimmen, aber ein Satz dazu wäre schön gewesen. Auch eine Mini-Inhaltsangabe hätte ich schön gefunden.

Abschließendes Urteil: Die abgebildeten Bücher sind so schön, dass ich in diese Bücher-Buch schon ganz verliebt bin. Für Fans von Bilderbüchern also unbedingt empfehlenswert.

The promise of the title is definitively kept: Some of the pictures I found encouraging ('Hey, I made something similar - it would be good enough to be printed in a book!') some intimidating ('Wow, so beautiful! I will never ever be close to such an artistic level.') but all of them are indeed inspiring. The books presented show the huge (probably not even the whole) range in which book art lives. But let's restart in a more orderly manner:


Contents: After a 2 page introduction by the juror Steve Miller, there follow more than 400 pages with photos of handmade books. Each photo has a capture which gives you the artist's name, the book's title and some information about the materials and techniques for the book. On the last pages you find a short information about the juror and an index of the artists.


My experiences with the book: The picture of the books follow no ordering that is apparent to me. Contributions of the same artist are always quite far from each other, there is even one book presented twice: one picture on page 28 the other on page 167.
Also the capture is very short and I would like some more information about the contents and the author or the idea behind the book.
The presented books themselves are breathtakenly beautifull. As mentioned before they capture a good portion of the huge range in which book art lives today. The photos are well shot and the lack of uniform backgrounds helps the pictures stay entertaining.


My final judgement: If you like to look at books you *need* this edition - I am already in love with this book book. The books presented are indeed inspiriring, entertaining to look at and beautifully pictured.

Eigentlich wollte ich noch einige der Künstler erwähnen, deren Bücher mich besonders beeindruckt haben. Aber der Post hier ist mal wieder länger geworden, als ich ursprünglich gedacht hatte. Also verschiebe ich das auf nächste Woche. Ich wünsche allen ein schönes Wochenende!
