Preparing to hibernate / Jahresrückblick

Ich werde von morgen bis Neujahr erstmal Urlaub machen. Heute ist vor allem Aufräumen angesagt. Da kommt mir diese neueste Kreation ganz recht. Ich habe vor einigen Wochen zweimal an einem Keramikkurs hier um die Ecke teilgenommen. Eines der Dinge, die ich da gemacht habe, ist dieses Briefsortierungsding. Die Aufgabe war, etwas ganz aus Tonplatten zusammenzubauen. Mit dieser Aufgabe war ich ganz schön unglücklich und habe mich dann für die einfachste Lösung entschieden: Auf eine große Tonplatte habe ich einfach eine Reihe kleinerer Platten parallel aufgestellt und habe das Ganze Papieraufbewahrung genannt. Beim Verzieren hatte ich dann mehr Spaß und habe diesen Buchling zwischen Bücherregalen hinbekommen. Ursprünglich wollte ich Miniminiminibücher in die Regale stellen, aber dazu sind sie dann wohl doch nicht tief und die Böden nicht waagerecht genug.

From tomorrow until New Year I will go on vacation. So today I am preparing for a one week leave. The object you see above helped me with tidying up my studio. I made it a few weeks ago in a ceramics class. At first I was not so happy neither with the assigned task (only use flat clay splabs) nor with the finished thing. But now that it is sitting on my shelf, I start to like it. Like it goes with tidying up, I also found remains of abandoned projects. This one is from the year 2006:
Beim Aufräumen habe ich auch einige unbeendete Projekte gefunden (wie eigentlich immer beim Aufräumen). Das hier ist ganz schön alt und schon zweimal mit mir umgezogen: Dieses Daumenkino mit dem Titel TrabiTrabi zeigt als Helden einen kleinen gelben Trabi und als Anithelden ein grünen Golf 2, der feige vor Dämonen und anderen Viechern wegläuft und umkommt. Das ganze ist ein gebundener Buchblock und funktioniert eigentlich ganz gut. Ich kann mich erinnern, dass ich frustriert darüber war, dass der Beschnitt nicht ganz exakt war, und das ist für ein Daumenkino schon ganz schön blöd!
Es war eigentlich als Geschenk gedacht. Anstelle des Daumenkinos habe ich dann eine CD mit Fotos verschenkt - als Slideshow funktioniert das ziemlich gut. Es gab außerdem noch einen Trailer, Cut-outs (natürlich gestellt) und einen Teil 2. Den habe ich jetzt bei Flickr eingestellt. Wenn ihr unten auf das Bild klickt, landet ihr in dem Set. Rechts oben kann man alle Bilder als Slide-Show sehen. Wenn's eure Internetverbindung hinbekommt, am besten auf 'schnell' gestellt, oder sogar von Hand noch schneller ansehen. Leider blenden die Flickr Slideshows automatisch die Bilder über, das gefällt mir gar nicht so gut. Vielleicht sollte ich eher mal einen kleinen Film davon machen.

Edit: Ich habe das mittlerweile als kleinen Film bei Youtube eingestellt. Ich habe ihn am Ende eingebunden.



On the photo with my hands in the picture you see a flip-book with the title TrabiTrabi (Trabi is the brand name of a car that was produced in GDR). You can see the small yellow toy trabi win against some demons and other AD&D tin figure monsters while the green Golf 2 runs away. (Edit: I rather turned it into a Youtube Video now. I cíncluded it at the end of the post.) I never put it into covers, it is still only the bound book block and has suffered some water damage since then. But I am surprised that it is still in good shape, after all it moved with me at least twice (I moved 4 times, but I think the book only made 2 of them - a complicated story...). Maybe I should have completed it! I abandoned the project because I was frustrated by my failure to get the front exactly flush. I ended up distribitung a photo CD instead of books where you could watch the short movie as a slide show. - And it somehow works even better like this. I made several of these series: TrabiTrabi was the first. In TrabiTrabi 2, Trabi fights a stuffed monster that had eaten cute teddy bears before. The CD also held a trailer and faked cut-outs. If you click on the (boring) picture above, you get to a Flickr page. On the upper right corner you can watch TrabiTrabi2 as a slide show.

While clearing out my studio I am also thinking about my accomplishments and failures during the last year. And a eventful year it was, in my private life as well as in my business! It started with my first bigger bookbinding project: Binding my own phd-thesis. You can see the 10 books I had to deliver to the university. I made several more for friends an family. All with my own paste paper on the covers.
With my phd finished I had to think about what I want to do now to earn money. I applied for various jobs, but either I wasn't happy with what was offered to me, or they chose someone else.Während sich das Jahr dem Ende zuneigt, kann ich nicht umhin ein wenig zurückzuschauen. Es war sowohl privat als auch beruflich ein aufregendes Jahr: Es fing im Januar mit meinem ersten großen Buchbindeprojekt an. Oben könnt ihr die Bücher sehen, oder einige davon. Es sind die Pflichexemplare meiner Dissertation.
Beruflich ging es holpig weiter. Nach dem nun definitiv beendeten Studium, sollte ich ja nun irgendeinen Beruf ergreifen. Ich habe eine Mege Bewerbungen geschrieben, Einladungen und Absagen bekommen und erteilt.
Im April habe ich dann geheiratet:

And so I spent the spring of the year 2008 with being frustrated about not having a job and not knowing what job I *would* want. Also with bookbinding and preparations for my wedding in April.
In May I started this blog, at first only in German. When the summer started, I already knew I didn't want a job but rather work self employed as a book artist. I spent the hottest months of the last year (which were not particularly hot) with applications for governmental support for this enterprise.
In August my niece was born and I am aunt for the first time. Here you can see her only a few days old. She was very small and we are all grateful and happy that she is healthy (and luckily much fatter now). Mit dem beginnenden Sommer wurde mir immer klarer, dass ich eigentlich lieber selbständig arbeiten, als einen Job haben will. Zum Glück hat mein Mann mich da unterstützt, sonst hätte ich dieses Unternehmen sicherlich nicht gewagt. Den Sommer habe ich damit verbracht, Existenzgründungszuschuß zu beantragen, mich über Existenzgründung überhaupt zu informieren und habe einen ziemlich schrecklichen Existanzgründerkurs hinter mich gebracht.
Im August wurde ich dann das erste Mal Tante. (Das Bild oben zeigt meine Nichte noch ganz neugeboren. Sie hatte es etwas zu eilig mit dem auf die Welt kommen und war so klein und zart! Wir sind alle froh und glücklich, dass sie gesund und heil ist.)
Im September waren meine Bücher in Ashville zu sehen: Meine erste Ausstellung!
Zum November habe ich dann auch die Unterstützung vom Staat für mein Unternehmen bekommen und seit dem 17. November bin ich als freie Künstlerin tätig. (Zumindest bin ich so dem finanzamt gemeldet.) Das ist aufregend, schön, und machmal auch ziemlich beängstigend. Eine sichere Lebens- und Berufsperspektive sieht anders aus. Aber ich war auch selten so glücklich, wie in meinem Atelier! Einiges bleibt da allerdings zu tun: Ich habe es lnoch nicht geschafft, eine gute Marketingstrategie zu entwickeln. Daran muss ich für das nächste Jahr definitiv arbeiten. Ich will außerdem ein, zwei Wochenendkurse anbieten, für die ich bislang nicht viel geplant und noch fast gar keine Werbung gemacht habe. - Aber das ist schon der Blick in die Zukunft und der kann bis zum 1. Januar warten.

Und damit verabschiede ich mich erstmal für dieses Jahr. Ich hoffe, wir sehen uns nächstes Jahr in neuer Frische wieder. Bis dahin: Frohe Weihnachten für alle, die es feiern, ein schönes Jahresende für alle (auch die nicht Weihnachten feiern) und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!

In September some of my books were exhibited in Ashville (Maybe you can spot them in the slideshow): This was the first time my books were publicity visible.
Since November now I am working as a fee book artist (that is what my tax form says). I am very happy about that, but it also scares me. There are so many questions I have about this. Only one of them is: Will I be able to make a living of it once the governmental aids will stop flowing? I'll definitely have to improve my advertisement! - But that that will have to wait until the next year.
